Johnny Cash appreciation thread
Just thought I'd make a thread devoted to Johnny Cash, a master storyteller. I'm listening to "I Hung My Head" off American IV. Seriously, Johnny Cash was a bad ass. None of these rap stars can ever come as close to being as imtimidating with their songs about killing people as Johnny Cash was. Besides that, Cash was a master stortyteller, although instead of doing it with books, he did it with his guitar.

We miss you Johnny. R.I.P.

3. Get his Sun & early Columbia recordings...

I know this is a lot to ask, but you should really hear J.R. on VINYL and in MONO...

I think certain nuances in his voice are lost in the "cleaned up" Stereo Cd versions...

Yeah- J.R. Cash transcends Country & Folk- his sound is part of the landscape, as far as I'm concerned...

8. MORE SONGS!!
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 06:43 PM by ZombyWoof
Unreleased gems AND they took the censoring bleeps out from his between-songs chat. They only reason they were never released is because they didn't have enough for 2 albums (and too long for one), and double-lives were unheard of then anyway. But the censorhip of his language was overdue to be removed. I want my Cash unvarnished. :-)

14. It would be cool on vinyl
But you know they won't even bother. But it is worth it this time, because it restores the songs to their actual playing order too. It is closer to being there than in any previous release - who doesn't get a chill when the prisoners cheer the "I shot a man in Reno" line? There are times bonus tracks are superfluous, but these are must-haves for Cash fans.

Look at all those 180 gram Johnny Cash records! I'm sure they sound better than the originals... Remastered, etc.

17. Actually- you can get almost all of it on brand new vinyl...
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 07:01 PM by Dr Fate
...I own a few myself...

You would be suprised how cheap a lot of C & W records are on E-bay as well...

I still love CDs the bonus tracks and the handiness is hard to beat... and the record version probably still has the BLEEP- I dont own either of the live vinyl records, so I'm not sure...

Try the old Johnny & June duet album or "Orange Blossom Special" for somthing different...

23. The thing about Johnny Cash is that he was cool. . .
I mean no matter what he was doing, he was cool. His entire friggin' career the man just had IT! The cross sectin of musicians that he hung out with, played with, and whose songs he covered tells you all you need to know about Johnny Cash. And yes, there is no better line chilling line ever written than "Shot a man in Reno just to watch him die".

25. Now, there was a man whose talent was truly on loan from god!
I hear the train a comin'
It's rollin' 'round the bend,
And I ain't seen the sunshine,
Since, I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison,
And time keeps draggin' on,
But that train keeps a-rollin',
On down to San Antone.

When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns,"
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.

I bet there's rich folks eatin',
In a fancy dining car,
They're probably drinkin' coffee,
And smokin' big cigars,
But I know I had it comin',
I know I can't be free,
But those people keep a-movin',
And that's what tortures me.

Well, if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine,
I bet I'd move out over a little,
Farther down the line,
Far from Folsom Prison,
That's where I want to stay,
And I'd let that lonesome whistle,
Blow my Blues away.

29. Cash's face looked like it was carved on Mount Rushmore...
And he's just as distinctly American -- a true original. His music knows no genre, it's everything and everywhere. One of his best songs is the title track on his last album, "American IV: The Man Comes Around":

"The Man Comes Around"
There's a man going around taking names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won't be treated all the same
There'll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the Man comes around

The hairs on your arm will stand up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup
Will you partake of that last offered cup?
Or disappear into the potter's ground
When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling, voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

Till Armageddon no shalam, no shalom
Then the father hen will call his chickens home
The wise man will bow down before the thrown
And at His feet they'll cast their golden crowns
When the Man comes around

Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still
Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still
Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still
Listen to the words long written down
When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling and voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

In measured hundred weight and penny pound
When the Man comes around.

30. "Unchained" for me!
"Rusty Cage" at about 80 watts (RMS) through a decent pair of three-way speakers. "Mean Eyed Cat" at 90 watts!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were the best band Cash ever had behind him.

People called him Country because that was as close as they could get. There never was a box that could hold him.

Punk rockers, bond daddies and tattooed girls will all get up and dance together to his music. Every time.

He had respect because he always gave it.

Although Kristofferson got close with, "He's a walkin' contradiction/Partly truth and partly fiction," Merle Kilgore (co-writer of "Ring Of Fire") nailed Cash:

"He was the truth."

Me? I Still Miss Someone.

31. The story of Cash: "God's Lonely Man"
This is a wonderful tribute piece to the life of Johnny Cash. If you haven't read it yet, please take the time to do so.

Salud!, Johnny.

God's Lonely Man -- Johnny Cash was a Christian who didn't cast stones, a patriot who wasn't a bully
