1. Anything with Gram Parsons
Love hurts, Return of The Grievous Angel, Hickory Wind. Boy those two together were awsome. Perfect!

3. she has a million
but I could vote for other also, anything she did with Gram, or are those Gram Parsons songs? because the harmonies between them are the best ever. Even better than the Beatles or Beach Boys harmonies in my opinion.

6. Her harmonies with Rodney Crowell were pretty great too
Think most of the ones up top were with him

4. Boulder to Birmingham
Covered by many...I like the Joan Baez version as well.

I don't want to hear a love song
I got on this airplane just to fly
And I know there's life below
But all that it can show me
Is the prairie and the sky

And I don't want to hear a sad story
Full of heartbreak and desire
The last time I felt like this
It was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire
And I stood on the mountain in the night and I watched it burn
I watched it burn, I watched it burn.

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in his saving grace.
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, I could see your face.

Well you really got me this time
And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive.
I have come to listen for the sound
Of the trucks as they move down
Out on ninety five
And pretend that it's the ocean
coming down to wash me clean, to wash me clean
Baby do you know what I mean

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham
I would hold my life in his saving grace.
I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham
If I thought I could see, I could see your face.

22. my favorite too, it is exquisite
I saw her many years ago at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She was breathtakingly beautiful in appearance and in voice. I'd love to see her again- her voice is just as wonderful as it was almost 30 years ago when I saw her.

7. I've Been An Emmylou Fan For Decades
The first song I remember hearing her sing is "Here, There and Everywhere." I was smitten with her voice from the first moment I heard this song. I have two favorite albums (CD's for you young 'uns); "Red Dirt Girl" and "Roses In The Snow." "Roses" is a bluegrass anthology, and it's awesome.

I also really love her "Duets" album. And she did a duet with Dan Fogelburg, "Only The Heart May Know" that I just love.

I think Emmylou Harris is one of the most talented women to ever grace any stage; she is versatile and a bit eclectic with her musical repertoire, and she is a helluva musician.

Thanks for this thread! I love Emmylou!

8. Red Dirt Girl
is my current fav. It's just so perfect for us southern women. Not only that the clay around here is, in fact, red and orange.

Red Dirt Girl

Me and my best friend Lillian
And her blue tick hound dog Gideon,
Sittin on the front porch cooling in the shade
Singin every song the radio played
Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down
Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town
Me and Lillian
Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian.

She loved her brother I remember back when
He was fixin up a '49 Indian
He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind
Up around the moon and back again"
He never got farther than Vietnam,
I was standin there with her when the telegram come
For Lillian.
Now he's lyin somewhere about a million miles from Meridian.

She said there's not much hope for a red dirt girl
Somewhere out there is a great big world
Thats where I'm bound
And the stars might fall on Alabama
But one of these days I'm gonna swing
My hammer down
Away from this red dirt town
I'm gonna make a joyful sound

She grew up tall and she grew up thin
Buried that old dog Gideon
By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard,
Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard
Got in trouble with a boy from town
Figured that she might as well settle down
So she dug right in
Across a red dirt line just a little south east from Meridian

She tried hard to love him but it never did take
It was just another way for the heart to break
So she dug right in.
But one thing they don't tell you about the blues
When you got em
You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom
There ain't know end.
At least not for Lillian

Nobody knows when she started her skid,
She was only 27 and she had five kids.
Coulda' been the whiskey,
Coulda been the pills,
Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill.
But there won't be a mention in the news of the world
About the life and the death of a red dirt girl
Names Lillian
Who never got any farther across the line than Meridian.

Now the stars still fall on Alabama
Tonight she finally laid
That hammer down
Without a sound
In the red dirt ground

16. "For Daddy"
I think that's the name of it.

"Momma never cared for the finer things in life,
if she did she never did say so to Daddy......"

is how it starts off.

Can You Hear Me Now

The first time I saw her was in the early 70's. She was playing with the Hot Band. Walked on stage with a peach in one hand & a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other. Opened her mouth & sang like an angel. Pieces of the Sky is one of my top ten favorites of all time.

21. It's all right cause it's midnight
and I got two more bottles of wine.

A folkie friend of mine used to cover that in her shows. Wow. That brings back great memories. Emmy Lou is amazing. I have never seen her live and would love to. She was beautiful with black hair and she is beautiful now with silver hair.
