Over a week ago I brought home a new puppy. For those who missed it:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=9334732&mesg_id=9334732

She's just the sweetest little thing, and not all whiney and annoying to the other animals. If she even comes close to the cats, they hiss and swat her. Lucy just swatted her three times really, really fast and hard. Caused her to bleed around her right eye. Thank goodness she missed the eye itself. Lena treats her the same way.

Our adult dog is acting extremely jealous. If we take the baby outside, the older dog runs away and then sits at a distance with this insanely indignant look on her face. She won't even look at us, purposefully ignores us.

We've made sure to give them all lots of attention, but sure, the puppy requires a lot more right now while she's training.

They all really need to get over this shit and fast.

3. She already gives the cats
a pretty wide berth most of the time. But she and Lucy were laying on the couch, not cuddled up, but pretty darn close to each other. Lucy was sleeping and all Tippy did was sniff her tail. That really deserved such an over the top response.

Lucy got herself a swat on the butt from mommy, but it didn't phase her at all. She just curled back up and went back to sleep.

2. Sibling rivalry..
and jealousy isn't limited to humans. I'm sure they'll work it out on their own.

What did end up naming the puppy?

4. I would have expected they
have figured out by now that she isn't going anywhere. He named her Tippy because she has little white patches on her chin, the tips of her toes and her tail.

:hi:

5. You have to make sure you show them all that you're the boss
They won't like it but they'll understand it. Then because you've laid down the law they'll accept it and before you know it they'll all suddenly adopt Tippy and tensions will be gone.

10. lunatica's right. You need to put on the mean mommie hat for a while.
Tippy's probably figuring out that the cats don't want too much contact yet. Cats are so, er, subtle about it. Remember too that dogs are pack animals and figuring out where they belong in the pack is part of their growing up. Poor Tippy's getting a crash course right now.

8. I certainly sympathize.
A new addition, especially a baby, is certainly tough. I've been fortunate, but then I adopt senior animals. Except for Jack, LOL. At five months, he was a handful. I was lucky that he had a big brother who just loved him and looked out for him... :-)

11. Jack was my only problem *knock on wood*
But it was because he was a puppy. My other dog couldn't stand him. So I asked my vet for advice and he advised me to just keep them apart. *sigh* Meneken was much older and had known and loved two sisters, so I believe it was just the puppy antics that freaked him out. This will probably happen with Tippy, too, as she learns her place in the "pack" and her siblings get used to her. :hi:
