That's what my colleagues called me during a conference in NO. I loved them! They wanted to go drinking, I wanted beignets.

3. French toast made with cinnamon-raisin bread
is the best! Tied for second are peanut butter on waffles or strawberries on waffles, also called Belgian waffles. I once had french toast made with orange brioche - it was so awesome!

Dammit. Now I'm hungry!

17. Grapples...
.
...are some sort of hybrid apple (GM???) that have
a grape-like fragrance to them (though I didn't get
much of a grape flavor when I tried one).
.
Very expensive and seem to be of curiosity value only.

But then again, it's been almost 35 years since I've spoken German,
so I just MAY be wrong about that.

Just Googled and found they're not GM'd -- it's a "relaxing bathing process".

Makes it more likely I'm wrong about "Grarschloch", too.

24. To me, a "relaxing bathing process"
involves someone scrubbing my back, massaging my feet, and it definitely does NOT include being infused with grape flavor. But hey, that's just me. I'm weird that way.

PS: You only need to drop the grapple-like "Gr" from the "Grarschloch". And: perfectemundo.

25. Lived down South for several years...
.
...and had a waitress tell me she could pick out a Yankee by the
way they ate their grits -- Southerners like black pepper and
butter and Yankees like milk and sugar like Cream of Wheat.
.
Had homemade cheese grits at a potluck dinner once and the cook
and the other Southerners were proud/impressed but I was pretty
much "meh".
.
And THOSE cheese grits look like a forlorn microwaved Peep.
.
This in NO way impugns the character or decisions of ANYONE who
may have embraced grits-related philosophies or lifestyles.

Or... (he said slyly to his closeted gritaphobic fellow travelers)... or DOES it?

28. I get the same reaction
People either love or hate grits. Ironically you can call it polenta and people tend to view it more favorably because they think they are getting something only the best restaurants serve rather than a rustic staple dish of the south.

A few years ago my daughter had slumber party and at breakfast I asked all the girls who wanted fried pork bellies. Nobody raised their hand. Then I asked who wanted bacon. Everyone raised their hand.

It's all in the marketing.

31. Yes, you are!
Belgian waffles are TEH AWESOME. Dessert for breakfast...strawberries, bananas, whipped cream, and nobody can do a damn thing about it!

And I like grits. Funny thing is that my wife, born in Louisiana, raised in Arkansas, doesn't really care for them.

33. well obv. you're missing something
it begs the question of where you were brought up that you never have eaten any of those things -- the family too poor to own a waffle iron is a family quite likely to at some point need to save money by whipping up french toast

i know there was many a day in my past when i had french toast for dinner because it was either that or wipe out the penny jar if i wanted to eat

i just can't picture that someone has never had pancakes, waffles, OR french toast -- i guess if you have juvenile diabetes and never broke yr diet even once then it could happen but otherwise it's hard to fathom how this could happen

my mom did her best to have eggs, bacon, toast -- a real breakfast -- every morning but it's her sunday too and sometimes she would just whip up pancakes and that's it, guys, now shuddup & read the funny papers...

38. Nobody I've met dislikes pancakes.
Pancakes with butter and maple syrup: authentic comfort food. Just go to a pancake house, ask for a regular stack and a cup of either coffee or tea, tell 'em to keep their damn powdered sugar to themselves and go nuts. It's wonderful food.

40. Only the grits.
Grits are beautiful. They are versatile. In some form or another they are the basis of some of the most interesting cuisnes in the world. Pap in south Africa, Polenta in Italy, etc.

ALthough grits and polenta are very different, even if some companies try to claim they are the same. Grits are courser and cooked faster, and are much tastier by themselves. You can use them instead of rice in various dishes, too, and can even chill them, cube them, and then bread and fry them for a dish that tastes and feels a little like oysters, if you do the breading right (you can do this with polenta, too).

Oh yeah, and they are the only grain I really like for breakfast. Pancakes are good when you can't get grits, but they are mostly a dessert if you ask me. Especially with as much syrup as I put on them. :)
