I just finished watching season 3 of Mad Men and at the end of the episode "Wee Small Hours" where Don has fallen asleep with that school teacher, Ms.Farrell the song "Prelude to a Kiss" is playing. Does anyone know who is singing this version? On the commentary track Matthew Weiner says that he had mistakenly thought it was Ella Fitzgerald and on the Mad Men website it says that it is sung by Sarah Vaughn. I'm 99.9% sure that it is NOT Sarah Vaughn. I've listened to her for years and I even have a CD with her rendition of "Prelude". I'm pretty sure that I know her voice when I hear it and that isn't it in that episode. Does anyone remember the episode? Does anyone know who that singer is?
If there are any Mad Men fans here who care, I found out that the singer of that rendition of the song is Nnenna Freelon. I hadn't heard of her until today. She is a contemporary singer. I'd assumed that since the producers of the show are so obsessive about period detail that they would have chosen a singer from the era during which the show takes place. Not so.
