Interview help: What questions would be asked of a candidate for a
job in a warehouse?

The only one I can think of is "how much can you lift?"

This is for an entry-level position. The kid's first job.

2. Experience stuff like can you drive a forklift?
Do you know what a bill of Laden is? What do you do with packing slips. Is the warehouse strictly for shipping things out or is it receiving too? Then there's troubleshooting questions. What do you do if something is broken when it arrives. Does the job entail packing things?

Records have to be kept, back-up paperwork has to be gathered for all transactions, deliveries and shipments. Orders have to be made.

4. Damn.
The answers to all of these questions would be "no." Would these questions actually be asked in an interview for an entry-level job? I would think there's a lot about the job he won't know going in.

He doesn't even have the applications in yet. I'm trying to help the kid out. I admit I'm somewhat co-dependent. There is so much he does not know in this world.

9. Yes they would be asked even for entry level
However, probably the most fundamental of all skills needed for warehouse works is safety. There's quite a bit of personal protective equipment used and an employee either already needs to know how to use it or get trained on the job. The next most fundamental skill you need in a warehouse is driving a forklift. However, you can teach someone to do it in an afternoon, even though it may take longer to get really proficient.

6. more than likely there will be some computer data entry also.
Many warehouses now use programs to track products, so some skill in that area may be in order.

8. The question would actually be
Are you certified to drive a forklift? Warehouses don't care if you can drive one if you're not certified.

5. If the warehouse is 15 feet tall and has 225,000 square feet of floor space,

and pallets average 9.6 cubic yards of volume, how many pallets can fit in the warehouse while still maintaining OSHA level standards of aisle clearance and safety in stacking, while simultaneously allowing for the highest density of pallets AND most efficient (and cost-effective) aisle-design for quick storage and retrieval, and at $1.25 a square foot, and assuming an average one-month turnover rate, and monthly employee, utility, and capital costs of $57,000, what's the average cost per month per cubic foot of product, and what can you do to shave 2% of that cost next month?

7. There might be safety questions, too.
But bonding and character references will be big. Also, can he pass a drug test?

12. Will you be willing to work overtime, Saturdays and Weekends?
Are you bilingual, particularly Spanish? Can you get along with different populations and people with different political views? Can you be on your feet for 8 hours at a stretch? Have you ever worked in a production orientated environment? If a shipment comes in at 4:45, would you be willing to stay until everything is unloaded, checked in and put away, even if it means staying to midnight? Will you be willing to wear the required safety equipment, be it hair nets, safety glasses, and work boots? Have you ever worked on a time clock (punch in/out for lunch, so forth).

Obviously, I have worked in a few warehouses in my time. :)
