"chicks" or "babes" </sarcastic chauvinism>

Seriously though, does anyone REALLY spell it "womyn"? If so, does it have a different meaning?

Because I think it is stupid to have bizarre spellings like that.

Changing a letter doesn't change anything.

10. I would prefer to go back to the roots of the word
back when man was the root that meant any human and there were seperate words to denote male and female human beings. Somehow men got to keep that word and be the default...the "norm" and we women got to be branded as the one's that were different and needed a pre-fix to our humanity.

22. I've always wanted to change my daughters' last name to (example)
Janedaughter. It just seems right to me. I always have to explain to people that women have no last name id unless they start with a fresh one. Even if one gets married and "keeps" her last name, it still comes from a man. The question asked on this thread is just for purposes of contention. I really honor your clear cut reply. I will bet that he still does not "get it".

of a hat, not being called some sexist name when I demonstrate I can be as forceful and powerful as a man and not having moments of anger expressed be somehow related to my menstrual cycle.

Other than that, I simply prefer that people think about the stereotypes they are reinforcing when they use certain language and stop putting the onus on me as though I am some "language nanny" when the real issue is THEIR FAILURE to think.

:D Any questions?

15. I call my self Chick all the time...
I don't see why people get so mad at Chick. I think it's what I am. I'm too old to be considered a girl, and I really feel too young to be a woman. Chick fits me just fine. And if that's offensive, I'm sorry, but I'm comfortable with it.

27. I once had a pastor say from the pulpit that women who leave the
church because of pronouns and male dominated language have other problems with religion. NO DUH!! Words are very powerful and their useage serve as a good indication of how society preceives you as a person.

If you're going to change the spelling of a word because it's sexist, then why not make it oh.... PHONETIC while you're at it.

Women and womyn don't conform to the sounds that are actually coming out of your mouth!

Woman should by changed to: woomin.

Women should be changed to: wimin.

30. Womyn is a relic term from the PC days of yore
Which I hope most of us here would like to distance ourselves from. It is, after all, the greatest gift one could give the freepers - a thought police going around making sure no one is offended.

Why was Rush so sucessful in the 90's? There were many reasons but one of them was this political correctness witch hunt that seemed to consume college campuses. Trust me, I was there. Our Political Science department head mandated that all term papers would use gender neutral terms when the 'men' or 'man' was used in a gender non-specific way. Miami University in Ohio had the permission system for all dating (you had to ask permission explictly to kiss, to hold hands, to do whatever.)

Rush Limbaugh took these extreme examples and made a show out of it, and as all great lies are based on a premise of truth, he used these examples ad nauseum.

So when I see the term womyn, I think of that faction of the left which is intent on forming circular firing squads.

33. I couldn't agree more
THe PC identity politics of the 90's were not only an embarassment, they took focus away from serious issues. While college campuses were all wrapped up in telling people how they should talk, corporations were allowed to consolidate, downsize, outsource and stagnate workers' wages without a peep coming from campus activists.

I'm a staunch feminist, and I understand the reasons for proposing a new spelling..but still think it's unnecessary and a little silly.
