I got my seed potatoes yesterday! 5lbs of blue and 1lb of Yukon Gold.

I asked the garden center to set aside a bag of blue potatoes for me. They sell out within a day or two. They called yesterday morning to say the potatoes were in so I went to pick them up. We have a tradition of making our Thanksgiving mashed potatoes out of blue potatoes. They are beautiful. The things are basically creamers but they also keep well. Awesome plants, too. Very attractive.

Well it can't hurt to try it right? It seems plausible enough anyway. I checked the gardening forum and there was a thread about growing them in trash cans and such, but I can't really keep a trash can on my balcony and expect the manager not to mind. :P

7. They don't need a lot of depth. A 1' deep pot like a rose bush comes in works fine.

Obviously, the more surface area you have the more you can grow, but I've gotten vigorous growth and a good number of spuds from those rose bush containers. My wife took one in last summer for the kids she teaches. There were enough potatoes for all of the kids to get some (sliced and baked).

6. I've grown them in containers as well. They make a great ornamental and produce.

Granted you need a LOT of containers to get much to eat, but it is still fun. Peanuts do well that way also, but you need a wide container. A bushel basket on the driveway works great for both. For harvest, you just upend it and sorting through the dirt is easy. The dirt is then available for another purpose and final cleanup is a garden hose. Now FINDING bushel baskets can be a trick...
