4. The Ninth Gate

It invited the viewer into an entirely separate world, all about rare book collecting (Satanic ones at that). The film had a very creepy atmosphere, without overt horror or special effects. Some have said that the film dragged in the middle. I don't think so at all. It was a nearly perfect film, one of my favorite horror flicks.

It must have started out well, because the last 30 minutes were horrible.

The film is a decent transfer, but actually leaves out 50% of the plot, where the whole process of finding the complete Satanic manual is linked to the 3 Musketeers.

Seriously, one of my favourite books ever and much better than the film. (The women in the book are sexier and Corso is NOT Johnny Depp).

This is another Depp movie that opens with his face stretched across the whole screen.

Oh - one piece of advice: go at a time when you can avoid the young teen girl crowd because they laugh and giggle during every Depp scene.

Both physically and in his acting skills. I love that he stays away from most commercial blockbusters and does films he only wants to do.

They air it on Independent Film Channel every once in awhile. Great, great, great, GREAT movie. Starring Depp along with John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Billy Bob Thornton, Crispin Glover, Alfred Molina, Gabriel Byrne, and Iggy Pop as a crossdressing, Bible-reading hunter. Music by Neil Young. Love it!!!!!!!

but it's a tough choice. There's "Dead Man", "Ed Wood", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Chocolat", "From Hell", "Blow"...all of which probablyt run a close second.

Personally I think Depp is the finest American actor of his generation. (Now someone needs to get him to do "Hamlet" or "Henry V"....heh...)

Not available in America on VHS or DVD. I copied a British DVD. This is Johnny Depp's directorial debut. Haunting, surreal, evocative film about a Native American (Johnny Depp) who makes a deal with Marlon Brando (excellent cameo) to be killed in a week's time for $50,000. The movie deals with this week and the time he spends making peace with his family. I've seen it three times and it gets better with each viewing. Depp does great directing, very reminiscent of Jarmusch or David Lynch. Worth watching, if you can find it.

I love them all! There's a Johnny character for every mood:

Edward Scissorhands - I just want to hug him!!

Gilbert Grape - Gilbert is very dependable, and I do need that in my life.

Sam - Gotta love Sam! He's just adorable and more mature than Benny to boot.

William Blake - for those who think Dead Man is morbid, I challenge you to look at it again.

The Brave - I would love to get my hands on a copy. I'm dying (eh) to see it, but I can't afford to outbid everybody on Ebay.

Hunter S Thompson - I love this movie. About as close as you could come to bringing HST's high-flying prose to life. And yes, Johnny does him perfectly.

Roux - Man, I'd run away with Roux anytime! An Irish Gypsy, now there's a combo!

Frank Abberline - Straight-laced Victorian widower by day. Opium fiend by night. But he treats the ladies well.

Dean Corso - Hmmm A great fuck but he will steal my books later. Better hide that first edition Saroyan I have...

Capt Jack - He'd never want to leave that island if I got a hold of him!

George Jung and Donnie Brasco are good but I'm not attracted to them, oddly.

was great too! He just keeps getting better and better. I can't choose a favorite. I like most of them for different reasons.
