4. she's supposed to have an album coming out this year
Winehouse is an amazing singer and she will be remembered in history because she writes as well as sings.

her phrasing is fantastic. her songs are humorous, sad and hopeful at the same time. she has a style all her own.

so, no, I don't think she's another christopher cross.

he didn't have even half the talent.

8. *Googles on "Christopher Cross."
Edited on Sat Mar-06-10 06:56 PM by Mike 03
OK, did that. I recognize one of his songs, which is "The Theme from ARTHUR."

One of my literary agents represented him or was related to him. I can't recall the details.

EDIT: No, sorry, it was the screenwriter of ARTHUR. He died at a young age. We had the same literary agent, and Chris Cross was not involved. Sorry for the confusion, this is my fault.

9. I've seen Christopher Cross live twice, and he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Great songwriter, brilliant live performer, AMAZING guitarist. Check out these two live performances of "Ride Like The Wind", one from 1986, the other from 1998 (the solos both start around 4 minutes in):

12. I guess Billie Holliday would've gotten scorned here too
cause she sure didn't have a pretty life sometimes.

same with Memphis Minnie. She turned tricks between shows during hard times.

Etta James...

and I see that they have already had some success...

14. whatever.
you have nothing to say that has to do with her actual skills as a musician so who cares what you have to say, right?

opinions and all that.

15. No...YOU are the one who is conflating biography and musicianship...
by referencing the "tragic" or "sordid" in your offering of Holliday and Douglas. You certainly said nothing about chops.
Frankly, Winehouse has not demonstrated the compositional skills of Douglas.
And, while Holliday's vocal range was technically limited, she had a profound influence on vocal phrasing.

How's that?

17. No. She has a excellent voice which Christopher Cross did not
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 05:35 PM by Lindsey
(IMHO). If she gets her act together, and comes up with tunes like her "Black On Black" CD (which she wrote most of the song- and it's one of my favorites), she'll be awesome. Of course, given her many personal problems, who knows will happen.

18. I can't equate Amy Winehouse with Billy Holiday just because they
both has substance abuse problems...

Beside that, I was referring to the drop into relative obscurity that happens after some win so many accolades from their piers.

See I think they both are talented and I can appreciate talent and drive no matter what the genre of music they happen to prefer.

Dissing Christopher Cross because he doesn't write songs you like is akin to trashing Hemingway because you don't like manly novels...

I fear that Ms. Winehouse is buying into the hype about her bad girl persona and destroying what should have been and hope will be a long career.

Billy Holiday had a much harsher life than Ms. Winehouse ever will have and I don't believe Ms. Winehouse had to deal with a music industry that wasn't at all willing to let her talent out of a small racially confined niche of music.

The frustrations that Ms. Winehouse has to deal with are just that; frustrations. Ms. Holiday dealt with the stark reality of having to deal with a society willing to waste her talent just because she was black.

20. You aren't seriously comparing them in musical ability, are you?
Winehouse hasn't done nearly enough to earn that comparison. Some people don't care about her personal life and still don't think much of her.

23. As soon as Amy comes out with something like 'God Bless the Child' or 'Strange Fruit',
you can make that comparison.

"Rehab" and "Fuck Me Pumps" don't make it.

22. An interesting defiant message that may cause some anxiety on how
to follow up, be true to your sound and meet the expectation. Christopher Cross was a little more mainstream I think.
