1. I had always understood it to be something a bad rider did to their horse
i.e. rode the horse for a long time or required it to do a lot of work and then put the poor thing back in the stall (you "put up" a horse when you stable it was what I was taught during riding lessons) without properly cooling the horse down or drying him off. I know that many people use it as if it has or think it has sexual connotations, but it didn't originally.

2. Exactly. Thats the origin
I can see how people misinterpret it but its not sexual at all.

37. Agree, it is totally about how you treat a horse
When I was learning about horses, there was a huge emphasis on not cooling down the horse and the dire consequences that could result. I think the risk is that they will either get muscle cramps and roll around, or get itchy and roll around, but in either case, rolling around is very dangerous for horses because apparently their intestines can get all twisted up very easily and result in intestinal blockage and very quickly lead to death.

Unless my trainer was just trying to scare me, which it did very well.

5. It's a subtle pastoral euphemism,
derived from a husbandry truism, for a woman of doubtful virtue (an archaic bit of sexism, in itself).

Apparently too subtle for some.

19. LOL no it isn't.
Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 02:59 PM by cherokeeprogressive
It's a euphemism for appearance, not loose morals.

It usually includes "looks like", as in "looks like so and so was ridden hard and put away wet one too many times".

This from the Urban Dictionary:

The way someone looks or feels when they've had a hard time of it. From a horseman's term, when someone has not taken care of a horse after a hard day.
He was all hot and sweaty, he looks like he was rode hard and put away wet.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rode%20hard%20and%20put%20away%20wet

Too subtle for some is correct.

27. The Urban Dictionary?
Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 03:32 PM by Dogtown
You do realize that the Urban Dictionary is contributor edited, don't you? Hardly a source to cite when doing your best "Gotcha!".

I hope you realize that using "like" in your phrasing renders it a simile, as well. The identification of the phrase as a species of metaphor makes my point succinctly.

34. I'm sorry, I never should have used a "contributor edited" site for a reference.
I mean, it's silly to think that the people who actually USE the phrase ("contributors") would know what it is intended to convey. How stupid can I be?

So it's a simile. I'm afraid your point is lost on me. After all, I'm not as schmart as the average DU'er, and cop to that fact quite often. I can tell you what it ISN'T though, and that's a reference to the morals of a woman.

Keep trying.

6. ANYTHINg can be made sexual, if ya know what I mean...
Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 01:24 PM by davsand
Nudge nudge, wink wink...

Seriously, I think anything can be made 'sexual" if that is how you want to view it. My favorite trick is to take a food, an object and an animal and use them together. People REALLY think you got your kink on...

"I'm gonna get my horse, a swimming pool full of whipped cream and a sheet of plastic..."

"I need a goat, a vat of Mazola, and a rubber band..."

"This looks every bit as fun as a skunk, a bottle of windex, and an onion..."

Rode hard and put up wet is most surely an old phrase for mistreating or neglecting your horse. Anything sexual about it is a later development.

13. No, hon, you like how you THINK I'm thinking
I'm as boring as watching paint dry.

I have NEVER done anything off color or risque in my life.

Why--I don't even have thoughts about stuff like that.

I am as innocent as the driven snow.

Crap, now I'm waiting for that big crack of thunder and a lightening bolt...

If "Rode hard and put up wet" WERE a sexual euphemism (and it ain't, see above) you would have just provided a perfect illustration.
Who IS that, anyway!
