My friend sent me this on facebook and I didn't think I could keep it for my self. We are smarter because we have a brain to think for ourselves.

Specifically, liberalism and atheism, and for men (but not women), preference for sexual exclusivity correlate with higher intelligence, a new study finds.

The study, published in the March 2010 issue of the peer-reviewed scientific journal Social Psychology Quarterly, advances a new theory to explain why people form particular preferences and values. The theory suggests that more intelligent people are more likely than less intelligent people to adopt evolutionarily novel preferences and values, but intelligence does not correlate with preferences and values that are old enough to have been shaped by evolution over millions of years."

1. Most conservatives I know are pretty smart

My parents and my step-parents are all conservative and they are all college educated. In fact, I don't think I have ever met a stupid conservative. The ones I know are all pretty damn smart. Go figure....

2. Oh, there's plenty of intelligent reasons to be a conservative. That's not the correlation.

The problem is that conservatism, as it's now being proselytized, has a particular appeal to dumb people... to those who are resentful of intelligence and have a dogged determination to revel in their cognitive abandon.

I know plenty of quite intelligent conservatives--scientists, teachers, even a couple of social workers. All but a few among those I know, however, go full facepalm when confronted with who their cohorts are on the political right. They can't stand Limbaugh or Beck and they get downright apoplectic about Palin's chances of winning the nomination.

The fact that you know so many intelligent conservatives probably says more about you and your family values and the circle you attract than it does about conservatism as a political movement.

3. I agree I know a few intelligent conservatives but...

The movement and the ideology as a whole perpetuate ignorance and boastful stupidity. It's the same as the fact that growing up in Alabama I met a few nice racists. They were nice people and you would never know their true feelings unless it came up but when it did you realized they were racist. But many if not most racists are mean.

4. Thats a bullshit study

I FUCKING hate this crap. First of all the guy who ran it is apparantly a crackpot. Secondly this is the liberal version of The Bell Curve an "intelligence study" that proved that blacks were less intelligent than whites.
As a biologist, I know that these intelligence studies are merely attempts to correlate a trait to forward a political agenda.
No legitimate scientist really endorses this "I"m better than you" crap...:banghead:

5. Good point and Im sure you are right.

I just like being better than conservatives and many of them are not as intelligent. While there are some brilliant ones, they deride us liberals for being college educated and worldly (elitist). They make me sick.

6. Yes. There is definitely a group of conservatives

that hate and fear the educated/intelligent. Unfortunately I've run into more than my share of intelligent but narrow minded fools. On both sides of the aisle I should say.
