SMOKEY's HOME!!!
He started meowing outside my bedroom window about 3:30 this morning.

I don't know how he got out, or why he went out. I don't know where he was or why he was gone so long.

I sat up, started screaming - SMOKEY!! ran and opened the back door. The dogs nearly mobbed him sniffing and everything. I scared the kids by screaming, they both woke up. We had a party at 3:30 in the morning! We just kept hugging him and petting him and kept purring so loudly.

He must have been trapped somewhere inside somebody's house or something, because only the tips of his ears and the bottom of his feet were 'cold'. He seems in fine physical shape and didn't act "starved" or anything.

We finally got back to bed and he slept snuggled up next to me.

It's all so weird him getting out and being gone so long. We've had him for about 10-11 years and he's never been gone more than a few hours before. He loved going outside in NC where it was WARM and he had a 'little friend' a few doors down, but here? He usually won't put more than his NOSE outside when there's snow on the ground. In fact, he gets upset when the dogs are outside too long and starts pacing and meowing at the door until I call them in. (I have strange pets.)

Anyway - - THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the vibes and advice.

:grouphug:

Now I have to go put all the stuff away I dumped out looking for him. :P

2. WONDERFUL news!!
.
As people posted. cats'll do this. Whatever you think you know
about your kitty's "nature", if he/she finds out what you're
assuming, he/she will do the opposite out of species pride or
something.
.
Or a REALLY perverse cat (if that's not redundant) will just go
on doing what you think is its "nature", just because he/she
found out that people like me believe the above.
.
I had a cat that slipped out ONCE. Didn't realize for hours that
the minute that I left the door unattended while putting grocery
bags on the table was 59 seconds more than she needed.
.
Gray drizzly day (gray dizzily cat). Popped a can o' tuna outside
the front door, ready for HOURS of searching the nearby woods
(had 3-4 more cans of tuna to pop along the way, just like in
"Hansel & Kittel").
.
At the sound of the can opener, from within a big shrub FIVE
FEET AWAY from the source of her "captivity", I heard this
definitively EMBARRASSED "mew"... and all was well with the world
again. GOT FIVE FEET AWAY!!!
.
Pussy.
.
Know how that feels. Treat yourself to counterbalance all your
anxieties over this.
.
.
Smokey feels you could treat yourself with the enjoyment you'll
feel feeding him something outrageous, like shrimp... or the
neighbor's parakeet.
.
Just tell him this is YOUR time.
.
But don't eat that parakeet. At least not in front of him.
.
That would be cruel.
.

9. RIGHT ON!!!!
He was just havin' a walk-around, as even mature, neutered boy cats will do from time to time (however much it scares the bejeezus outta us humans). Glad he returned and put your mind at ease!

Welcome back, Smokey! :pals:

14. i was convinced that
he'd passed away in the house.

Damn kitty!! I've just been out doing a walkaround outside trying to figure out where he'd been. There's still snow on the ground here. But there are so many bunny tracks around the yard I can't figure it out.

I'm just so happy he's alive and well. :bounce:

I loves my Smokey-cat! :loveya:

I'm so glad he found his way back home. Whenever one of my cats decides to take a "vacation", I can't sleep at night. So happy for you!

26. A stray died in a closed toolshed last summer.
A neighbor came to our door to ask us if we had a black and white cat. (We don't). Apparently, he opened his toolshed for some cleanup work in the spring, then shut the door and locked it. He noticed an odor about a month later and found a dead cat inside. So sad. When one of my cats disappears for more than a day, I go around the neighborhood and check with my neighbors. I imagine this happens alot.
