Advice or reviews on Kindle 2?
I'm thinking about getting my kid one for his birthday. I've read some reviews online, and it sounds pretty good, but I'm interested in getting opinions from folks I trust. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

1. I love mine.
The biggest plus I'd say is the e-ink technology. There's no back light (you can't read in the dark, though,) and therefore no screen flickering. It's very easy on the eyes, books are cheap and if your kid's an avid reader, this device holds a ton of books. Easy to take with you everywhere.

Battery life is up to a week after a charge (less if wi-fi is always enabled.) You can adapt the font sizes and many other stuff, and if 'text-to-speech' is enabled within the ebook, you can have it read to you without buying an audio book. You can upload your preferred music to listen to while you read.

I strongly suggest to get a case with it, also.

Downs: Well, only black and white. Tiny keyboard. No smell of actual books. ;)

2. Thanks, Wesley
That's encouraging, sounds good! My "kid" is 41, but I don't want to spend that kind of money if it isn't what it's cracked up to be. Appreciate the feedback.

3. I'm sure your "kid" will love it.
Mine's in use every day. Check amazon.com (the Kindle store) if the books your "kid" likes are mostly available. :hi:

4. I'm 45 and have the kindle 1 - love it; I thought I would miss the feel of books
but I love how light weight it is for reading and its so much easier on the eyes than a regular paperback. Plus I can try a free sample of any book and see if I'm going to like it. However, it is hell for delayed gratification because I no longer have to wait to get a book!

7. Aren't you sweet ...
Your Mom is very lucky. Yep, I'm thinking of it for my "kid's" birthday which is in June. But if I'm going to get him one, I need to start saving now. :)

8. I couldn't have afforded one by myself, it was a collective present from me and my brothers.

9. Who's got two thumbs and loves his Kindle 2?
THIS GUY!!!! ;)

The only thing I'd suggest before buying, as a poster noted above, is that it might be wise to check out Amazon and make sure that the type of book you son likes to read is represented in the Kindle choices. They get a lot, but they don't get everything.

Now, I don't have ANY problems with my Kindle, but I think the Nook probably also bears looking at. IIRC, Barnes&Noble offers discounts on purchases and has "special" promotions and titles that become available only when you're in a Barnes&Noble store. A complete gimmick to get you into their store, but IMO a very cool one :)

Have fun, whichever you choose- I don't think you can go wrong!
