I have a lid lock on my washer????

are they afraid I'm going to steal my own clothes???

2. I'm guessing it's a child safety thing,
mine has one, but it is only engaged when the spin cycle is running.

Annoys me, too. But then again, a lot of things annoy me. I should look into that one day!:)

7. They only lock on the spin cycles.
To keep people from sticking their arms in the thing while it's rapidly spinning around. You know someone has done it.

10. Usualy, the lid lock is on the front loader, the machine where you
have a front door that opens to allow the clothes to be placed into the machine. The reason for the lock is that, if you happen to open the door while the machine is running, such as the little kiddies may do, or mom (or other) if they happen to decide to throw another item in there, water will pour out in great quantities if it's full of water.
Usually a top loader won't have a lock. Just a safety shut off switch.
