Coolest tv show theme music?
I'll nominate 2 different shows.

Peter Gunn just had the all-time coolest theme music ever.

Star Trek: The Next Generation had the best classical theme music on tv (even if I did prefer the original series).

New boy in the neighborhood
Lives downstairs and it's understood.
He's there just to take good care of me,
Like he's one of the family.
Charles in Charge of our days and our nights,
Charles in Charge of our wrongs and our rights!
And I sing, I want, I want Charles in Charge of me.
Charles in Charge of our days and our nights,
Charles in Charge of our wrongs and our rights!
And I sing, I want, I want Charles in Charge of me.

The worst thing about that show was the theme song and Shannen Doherty's oddly uneven eyeballs.

11. Thank you for being a friend: Andrew Gold
Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
your heart is true you're a pal and a confidant

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be for me
and the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friend

Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend

If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a cadillac
Whatever you need, anytime of the day or night

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear, even though it's hardly here
I will stand real close and say,
Thank you for being a friend

(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Let me tell you bout a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend

And when we die, and float away
I'll see you there, and once again
Thank you for being a

Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
Whoa, tell you about a friend
(Thank you right now, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend
(I wanna tell you right now, and tell you again)
Thank you for being a friend
(I wanna thank you, thank you, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend

"The Jetsons" is the swinginest theme EVER! Listen to the string part at the beginning, then the trumpet solo for 'daughter Judy'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35mJz04LIp4&feature=player_embedded#

The zen, almost haiku simplicity of the lyrics:

Meet George Jetson
His boy Elroy
Daughter Judy
Jane, his wife.

29. Jane and the Dragon
An animated Saturday cartoon, but Taarna, our "Orange Retriever" loves it! She's a feminist!

There once was a lady in waiting
Let's call her Jane.
That girl wasn't ordinary-

No way for me a lady stuck in waiting
I'd rather battle fire-breathing dragons
I knew I could prove that a girl could be a Knight
Though my friends all laughed at me
but...

I wouldn't be discouraged and trained in secret
Then a dragon pinched the Royal Prince
and everyone was freaking
So I went alone to the dragon's home
to slay the dragon

Hey now, hey now now

Jane and the Dragon are best friends now
Dragon's sweet, he let me save the young Prince
Then the King made me a Knight apprentice

Hey now hey now now...

With Dragon's help I'll be a Knight someday

31. Jonny Quest
I'm serial.

The percussion-heavy big band jazz theme music for the 1960s series and each episode's score were all composed by Hoyt Curtin. In a 1999 interview, he stated that the jazz band for the series consisted of 4 trumpets, 6 trombones, 5 woodwind doublers, and a 5 man rhythm section. Alvin Stohler or Frankie Capp usually played drums. While a string section comes in at moments of tension or pizzicato for comic relief, the score is primarily driven by a big brass sound. Curtain stated that the band took about an hour to record the main theme. It contained a trombone solo performed by jazz veteran Frank Rosolino, and a complex riff in which the trombone players were physically unable to keep up with the rapidly changing slide positions needed. Cues in the series were generally recorded in one take, done by a regular group of union session players who could "read like demons."

Creator/producer Doug Wildey had this to say about the theme: It was excellent. The music to me is most important. All cartoon or animated adventure shows have wall-to-wall music -- the music never stops. What I wanted for the Jonny Quest theme music to do was the same job that other shows' music had done. On Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip and on and on, you could remember the music. When you heard that music it signaled when the show was going on the air. What I wanted was heavy drums -- jazz drums. They put out a record, by the way, "The jazz theme from Jonny Quest." Hoyt Curtin was the musical director and did a fine job.

Listen to it here: http://www.televisiontunes.com/Mp3.swf?file=themesongs/Jonny%20Quest.mp3

62. WKRP
Baby, if you've ever wondered,
Wondered whatever became of me,
I'm living on the air in Cincinnati,
Cincinnati, WKRP.
Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,
Town to town and up and down the dial
Maybe you and me were never meant to be,
But baby think of me once in awhile.
I'm at WKRP in Cincinnati..

Said to the bartender "Best night I ever had"
Singin' to the bar
Had a microphone (in)to her heart

I said -
Goodbye madam
I'd had a bird in hand

I said - I'm doing good
And put love in her heart

I actually do like that one (the first version) but my actual choice for number 1 would be the New BSG theme. Really interesting and sets the mood exactly right.

And no one is mentioning "All in the Family", that's surprising.
