1. My dear datasuspect...
To society as a whole, I am nothing...

I am important to my husband, my children, my grandchildren, and to my friends...

I have helped raise my daughters, and I contributed also as a nurse...

Now those careers are over, and I'm writing. A few people have read and enjoyed my work...

These are my contributions...

Why do you ask?

How about you? What are your contributions?

22. You're fulla crap.
.
For a year or two... I was the one showing up at our community radio BOD meetings,
trying to fight its corporatization and push it for more transparency. A BUNCHA folks
got involved eventually... for years... and some of them even got on official station-
related committees and the BOD itself and made some cracks in the walls surrounding
that so-called "community" station.
.
We have ALL fallen... exhausted... by the wayside.
.
Except Kali. For many years, she has been THE main... if not the ONLY surviving and
consistent voice of conscience and true community reason still hammering away at those
walls.
.
Would someday MY cojones be so big. She's also involved in lots more little and moderate
"contributions to society" (AND individuals) of which I'm aware -- and almost certainly
more of which I am not.
.
Since someone asked earlier about contributing to society "ass a hole", I'd say that
Kali is the biggest societal "ass a hole" contributer that I know.
.
Don't look like that. You know what I mean.

16. I've been asking myself that alot lately
I feel completely and utterly useless, ready to just disappear.

It wasn't always like this though. I happened to do a search yesterday that led me to some statistics on a scientific paper that I published many years ago, when I had a totally different life, and saw that there are over a thousand other papers that have referred to that paper, meaning that just briefly, I contributed something important to the body of scientific knowledge.

But that was yesterday, and today I am worthless.

32. Me, too. I feel superfluous. What have I done lately?
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 05:07 PM by AlienGirl
I was born with incredible potential. I was wildly precocious: I have things I wrote down when I was 18 months old and learning to spell. I blew the top off an IQ test at age four, when I was also diagnosed with depression. I had a bad time with my classmates through my school years, but got a lot of satisfaction out of saving and rehabilitating wildlife.

I graduated high school with very high grades and was a Merit Scholarship finalist. Tested out of two years of college. Dropped out to pursue my romantic interests. Got married to my high-school sweetheart and was married for nine happy years, producing two beautiful sons. Donated blood when I weighed enough. Rescued more wildlife. Was a full-time mom. Produced a sci-fi zine that had subscribers in France and Australia.

Then got cancer. Got dumped. Hubby brought the kids to his mom's house because I was very ill. I talk to them and get them on summer vacation, but I have not raised them since they were 6 and 4, and I will always grieve and regret that.

Recovered from cancer. Got an infection that has a 50% survival rate and was in ICU. Recovered some more. Caught a self-confessed serial killer in an undercover operation spanning three states. Drove solo across the country to finish my degree, a decade too late.

Got married again, went to ex#2's home state and got a Real Job that I held for 2 years. Excelled at the job for a while and saved several families and protected many kids. Marriage went south, I started getting too sick to do my job. Panicked and moved across the country again, to live with friends. Probably pushed ex#2 completely over the edge into madness in the process.

I have not done anything of value in more than a year. Mostly I sleep or read, take pills and try to find treatment.

I seem to have screwed up at every opportunity, and I wonder if I'm done. I'm afraid to make any more decisions, because I'll probably just screw up again.

Tucker

They are very bad tempered and quite a bit more irritable than that space whale thing was on Star Trek IV.

I've messed with them before, saved all your sorry asses, in fact. Trust me, you don't want to piss them off. They can eat people like chickens scratching around in the straw eat insects. Except they'll Kentucky fry us first.

31. I'm probably a drain, actually. I'm ill, on General Assistance and medical coupons
I have more debt to corporations than I can possibly repay, I have only saved a relatively few equally valueless lives, and although I maintain an individual of a Threatened Species, nobody has any real ideas for rebuilding enough habitat for any potential progeny to work on a viable repopulation program.

So I won't be surprised when I am urged to get out of the way and make room for someone who is good at being a successful human being.
