Why do they call it the "Stanley Cup"?
It doesn't sound like something you'd want to win.

11. My friend's son is one of the keepers of the Cup.
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 12:39 AM by Kat45
There are four of them, IIRC, and two have to travel with the Cup everywhere it goes. And with the international make-up of the NHL, he gets to go to all over the place.

4. Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby KG, GCB, GCVO, PC
Edited on Mon Feb-22-10 08:37 PM by pokerfan
There's an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Garter">Order of the Garter (KG)?

ETA: Never mind. The order of the garter is clearly referring to the hockey version. Ice hockey players use a similar, albeit more masculine, version of a garter-belt for holding up hockey socks. As these socks are essentially wool tubes, they need to be kept from rolling onto the ankles. One may opt to utilise hockey tape for secure adherence; otherwise, a hockey garter-belt performs the same function. These are typically elastic featuring metal hourglass clips with rubber circles, allowing for adjustment and a locking mechanism to ensure a snug fit.

10. Actually, he probably wouldn't.
She has never had him altered. Once she had to board him while she traveled. Upon her return, she was flabbergasted to discover that Stanley had jumped an eight-foot barbed-wire fence to gain access to a female. Shortly thereafter there came into existence a litter of puppies that looked like their pit bull Mom with Stanley's head stuck on!

12. Because the "Mortimer Cup" just sounds stupid
But slapping a rubber disk around a sheet of ice with curved sticks makes perfect sense.

14. I'm gonna go out on a limb here.
When one wins an award of that magnitude, one has won laurels. I believe the award is in honor of Stanley Laurel. And a fitting one it is, too.

Wha...what? Ice Hockey? Oh, dear. Well, that's quite different. Never mind.
