16. The tension inside that hot tiny car was palpable with the rabid horror waiting outside...
...and to add the little boy having a seizure, then becoming unconscious just ratcheted up the drama.

What was so scary was what you didn't see, it was what you imagined was happening.

3. The scariest stuff ALWAYS happens under "normal" circumstances
These movies where teens decide to go get high and screw in an abandoned, haunted mine shaft don't really do it for me.

I figure that if your "crib" is an an abandoned, haunted mine shaft, you pretty much deserve whatever is waiting for you down there.

But a twilight skinny dip?

HEY...our FOREFATHERS died so that we could skinny dip at twilight. Well, they died for other stuff too. But mainly those twilight skinny dips.

:toast:

4. Animals, pffft! As if!
Now, attack of the killer tomatoes? That's some scary stuff, there. Nobody suspects the tomatoes; they've always been our friend!

5. Not exactly a horror movie, but "The Edge" had some terrifying animal scenes.
It starred Anthony Hopkins and some Baldwin or other. They crashed in Alaska and were being stalked by a killer grizzly who ate Harold Perrineau Jr (an underrated actor) early on. There was one scene where Hopkins looks up and the bear is just a few feet from him, and the face fills the entire screen. There was no dramatic music, and it was completely unexpected. My heart stopped for about eight minutes, I think.

7. The Birds (spoiler)
I had nightmares about the scene where Jessica Tandy finds her neighbor shredded and eyeless.

Spoiler for the two people in the country that haven't seen it.

9. Not a whole movie, but this scene:
Khan, about to put Ceti Eels in Terrell and Chekov's ears
Khan: You see, their young enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Later, as they grow, follows madness and death.
Chekov: Khan, listen to me...
Khan: These are pets, of course. Not quite domesticated.

I slept with a pillow wrapped around my head for weeks.

10. Giant Spider Invasion.
The inbred redneck Packer fans scared the crap out of me, so I was cheering for the spiders.

Though I didn't care for the sequels.
