5. But if Bush is somehow reinstalled, you'll have to pay taxes
to a Republican government and be subject to a lessening of liberties through various Patriot acts.

17. My indian friends tell me that India does not allow dual Citizenship
So, you would have to give up your Indian Citizenship (a lot of my friends have, especially the gay ones).
Another Indian friend who is a US Citizen, says that when he goes to India he could always get a passport since the authorities in India have no way of knowing that he is also a US Citizen.
Sooooo, I'd say go for it!! I am a new citizen myself.
I decided to get citizenship when Bush got selected. I thought as a French citizen I could be deported if US and France disagreed on anything.
Unfortunately I had to say the Pledge knowing he was in the WH and promise to bear arms (which I would NEVER do, for ANY country), but it was a group pledge, so I just did not say anything.

It was tough, but worth it if you treasure what you have in this country, which is as wonderful as it can be horrible (just like any other, I guess)

24. I think India now allows dual citizenship for NRIs
But in any event what they allow is somewhat beside the point. Just renew the Indian passport before becoming US citizen and hold onto it. There is no likely point at which you would have to actually turn it in.

22. you probably should
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 01:52 PM by goodhue
If you are a permanent resident who plans on residing here for the long-term, then you certainly should apply for citizenship, not only to vote but for your own protection. Ever since the ill-advised 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, permanent residents should be concerned about their the long-term security of their status. If you were ever convicted of crime you could be deported. Also, most non-citizens not eligible for SSI. And continual threats to federal loan eligibility for permanent residents. To name but a few compelling reasons.

But before applying to US citizenship be sure to renew you current passport for the greatest period possible. Although the US not likely to recognize dual citizenship, your current country might. Plus the non-US passport provides some additional security in case all hell breaks loose. My spouse smartly renewed her British passport before becoming US citizen.

I've been working on my in-laws since 1996 and all but my mother-in-law are now citizens. We hope she is never convicted of a crime because her forced departure would be devestating to many including grandchild.
