i once swam with dolphins off the coast of Carpinteria, CA...random summer day, family and friends were on a boat in a cove and suddenly this huge pod appeared...several of us put on our masks and jumped in...i remember being shocked by how big they were and being thrilled, but a little afraid as they darted by me...i treasure that memory.

7. In Va. Beach they'd come in close and you could hear them talking to one another.
It made me a little self-conscious!!

Did you hear about:

The wild dolphin that got injured, was 'hospitalized' at a Aussie Aquarium for x weeks, was released back where it was found, and he and his podmates were later found 'tail-walking' in the wild? He learned it at the aquarium and taught it to his buds in the wild!

The pod of dolphins at the aquarium in Mississippi whose tank was flattened in Katrina later re-grouped into their pod in the Gulf and were ALL seen back together and rescued together. What made them interesting was that some had lived only in captivity while some had been in the wild, but they stayed together when their tank collapsed in the storm surge.

They're pretty amazing.

If you spend any time at Carp in the summer , the pods cruise by almost daily.
They stay pretty far offshore but you can reach them with a surfboard. They really seem to enjoy interacting as much as we do.

They are also into riding waves, so I can relate. here they are in Santa Monica near the pier

12. There's a pod of spinner dolphins off Makaha, Hawai'i
a famed surf spot. But I never saw them catching any waves.

5. Those are some great shots!
And yes, it looks like they are having fun. It reminded me of the "bubble rings" they make and play with:
