Oh, yes!

We LOVED it!

Full of great lines, action and acting!

Say what you like about Crowe himself......but the man can act.

35. The novels by Patrick O'Brien that the movie was based on are also very good.
Have you read those?

36. I just looked it up on Wikipedia.
Looks like a winner... I'll have to see if the local library has them.

Thanks!

:hi:

(The movie was great, too)

24. OMG
That is my favorite movie of all time. Crowe is wonderful, and Weir's direction is spot on. It's almost like being transported back in time. And damn, does The Commander look fine in that Royal Navy uniform, blond hair, ruffled shirt, and all.

:silly:

29. I've only seen it once, on hulu
so it's about time for another viewing :)

Yeah, it's an amazing film. What'd you think of the brain surgery part? ;)

32. The brain surgery was pretty cringe-worthy
But the doctor operating on himself was what really got to me. I blathered on so much about the movie that I got four(!) copies for Christmas that year! I regret not getting to see it on the big screen. It really wasn't advertised much here, so I missed out. Hope they do another one. :P

Joaqin Phoenix as the evil emperor was just great - you can really hate and fear him. I'm recommending it, BV.

22. I think I'll see it.
I recorded it off of TCM the other night. I know it's violent, but if I steel myself I can handle that.

I have loved Russell Crowe ever since I saw "The Sum Of Us." Then I saw "L.A. Confidential" and loved him more.

:hi: mark :*

10. I loathed and despised this movie.
Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 04:02 PM by Alexander
Most people I know loved it, but I found the acting uninspired (except Richard Harris at the beginning), the plot nonexistent, the characters weak - Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus was especially whiny and stupid - and it was overall a very shallow and predictable movie.

Then again, I also didn't like Avatar, and a lot of people have given me grief for that.

EDIT: Oh yeah, it's also not historically accurate in the slightest. But that's the least of my complaints.

16. It may well be historically inaccurate, but it does get you
thinking about the meaning of patriotism. What do you do when your native land has a totally corrupt government?

20. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix are cool
It's the movie that made Joaquin Phoenix a star. Before that he had been a character actor since childhood.

34. One of my all time favorites!
Crowe is sooo sexy, and Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic as the evil, troubled emperor, who is yearning to be loved. It's a dark, very intense movie, but well worth watching!
