Wife just found out she'll be working for the census
a clerk job - data entry, I believe.

Doesn't pay a lot, but seeing as she's been mostly unemployed since 2001, it's welcome.

2. Yep, pay isn't great, but definitely something
And considering the history of the last freaking decade, definitely a good thing :D

3. She's taking my old job
I left my job as clerk for the census today.

Tell her that she wants to be in recruiting... picking up the phone is WAY better than data entry. :P

4. well...depends...
I know I'd rather do data entry - I HATE talking on the phone.

I suspect she'd feel the same.

We both have experience doing mindless work in front of a computer - and neither of us is great at being pleasant and talking to people :)

5. Trust me on this
I have spent weeks of my life both picking up the phone and entering applicant folders, and the applicant folders are where fun goes to die.

At least with the phones you get to hang out with the other people there when there are no calls.

7. Congratulations and best of luck to your wife.
I worked for the census last time around and had a great experience. I worked with some really great people and made some lifelong friends.

My jobs included map spotter, enumerator, assistant crew leader, then crew leader. The money was good, and the bosses were great.

8. How much does the clerk job pay?
I know the enumerators are paid well. I'm waiting to hear from the census myself.

10. $8.75 an hour
as she will tell anyone - she made more when she worked during high school 20+ years ago.

12. Wow. It's that low!
I think enumerators are paid around $22 or $24 an hour. That's a huge difference!

14. Pay varies according to the area
Current pay is around $17 for inner city Minneapolis and St Paul and only around $12.50 in the rural areas just outside the metro area.

15. It's not $22-24 an hour here
as another reply says, it varies by area

according to the website, the census takers start at $11.50 an hour.

So, $8.75 is ridiculously low - but I'm not sure if that $11.50 goes for the entire area or not.

20. That makes sense for it to vary by area.
This is a high cost area so that's probably why the pay is higher.

11. Congratulations to your wife
:toast: It's a good way to meet people, sharpen up the data entry skills and have some money coming in. I met the nicest people when I worked during Census 2000.

13. This is voluntary, right?
It's not, like, forced labor or anything?

From the tone of your Title Line, that issue was in doubt for me.

16. what?
are you serious?

You seem to be the only one who's taken it that way, and - of course it's voluntary.

Just saying that she got the call that she got the job

22. Been working there almost a year now
Only mistake was accepting a promotion, The office supervisor and management positions are very stressful.

I really love the people that I've worked with, but sometimes the Bureau's higher management make Dilbert's boss look like Captain Picard.
