3. Having grown up in a town
where downtown was all but abandoned and now is being revitalized I had to vote for that.

2. I voted for smart satire.
I always feel a little bit better at the end of the day after the Daily Show is over. A little less isolated, a little more hopeful that there are people out there besides me that "get it." It's hard, nay impossible to imagine a voice like Stewart/Smithburg's finding an audience during the 80's.

The continuing success of Christopher Guest and Company is also an optimistic sign for me. They don't do Adam Retard Sandler numbers, but they make great comedies that make money.

A good show like Gilmore Girls can hold its own against "Who Wants to Survive Their Tempting Apprenticeship Island" without having to resort to "very special episodes" in which Rory gets her period or whatever.

I applaud all the options on your poll, though. Great new American authors (for me) include Alice Sebold, Alice Niffenegger, and Eric Schlosser (non-fic).
