Having just watched "You're Gonna Miss Me"

which is a documentary about Roky Erickson (had never heard of him), I was immediately reminded of another similar documentary I had watched about a year ago, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" because of how similar their stories were. Although really, the first thing that struck me was how similar their voices were. When I heard Roky sing, the first person that came to mind was Daniel Johnston, and then as the story unfolded, it was astonishing how similar their stories were.

Both were from Austin, Texas. Both from about the same generation. Both musicians with critical acclaim in their early years. Both fell into the depths of a mental illness, both allegedly triggered by drug use. Both had religious mothers who seemed a bit off the edge themselves. And both have made comebacks in their late middle ages.

Have any of you seen both of these documentaries? What do you make of the "coincidences"?
