1. Evolution defined:
"Everything in this Universe, from solar system to man, from man to atom, either rises or descends, either evolves or degenerates, either developes or decays. But nothing evolves mechanically, as only degeneration and destruction proceed in this fashion. For that which cannot evolve consciously, degenerates, and is destroyed, and that is what is happening all over America. ...For, if human progress and human evolution, in the correct meaning of the terms, is ever to come, then it can only come as a result of conscious efforts, and never as a result of unconscious or mechanical actions. ... For the evolution of man is the evolution of his consciousness, and man's consciousness cannot evolve unconsciously! The evolution of man is the evolution of his Will, and man's Will cannot evolve unwillingly...." This quote is from a letter from Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, from 1979, when he was being kept locked in solitary confinement in an underground cell for a crime he did not commit.

3. Yes, an amazing guy.
That was from one of the many long letters he wrote me during that period. I've kept all of them. The post on here reminded me of that section, for some reason, and so I dug that letter out. It's strange to think that was 25 years ago. Time flies.
