Did Holden grow up to be a serial killer, or something else?

My guess is at the least he had a nervous breakdown.

1. Holden died on the streets
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 10:10 AM by southpaw
His jaded lack of enthusiasm for pretty much everything led him straight to a raging heroin addiction, homelessness and, finally pneumonia.

Miserable fuck never saw his 21st birthday.

2. That's a pretty wideheld phallusy.
.
I never had a nervous breakdown nor did I become a serial killer although,
when I was growing up... I was holden it all the time.
.
Serial masturbator... that's a different story.
.
I'd discuss it, but I'm, um... you know... ... ... busy right now.
.

4. He grew up to be Call Me Wesley.
He turned out just fine, after he got past the hormones and undue angst. Cute, too.

8. Well, I think one common perspective on the book is that it's a long psychiactric session...
Somehow or other, he's ended up in a mental health facility of some description, and that the story is him talking to a therapist or psychiatrist about his breakdown, and how he somehow manages to find a sort of redemption in the innocence of his kid sister.

Some would argue that if this was Salinger's intention, he might have had Holden directly address the doctor during the course of the book, i.e. "you know what I mean, doc?" But that might not have been subtle enough for Salinger. (Philip Roth threw a few of those into "Portnoy's Complaint")

9. He never grew up. He became Peter Pan.
He spends his life protecting kids from falling off the cliffs of childhood innocence.
