Pink at the Grammys
I didn't watch the Grammys, but have seen some of the photos / footage at the Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/31/pinks-grammy-performance_n_443915.html

Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but why the hell do singers have to do sh*t like this? What is the point to swinging around upside down, stripping and getting dunked in water? I know her song was something about glittering in the air, but does she have to do that literally?

To me it just seems ridiculous. I'm not calling out Pink in particular, but all performers who seem to just do over the top stunts. I don't mind dancing - Michael Jackson, et al really are / were 'performers' - some of his stuff was ludicrous, too. And flailing around on a trapeze? Why?

Can someone please enlighten me?

1. to be different? to entertain?
Some people consider her performance artistic.

3. Showbiz. Why did Liberace have to dress like that when...
if you listened closely, he could actually play the piano? Would Kiss be Kiss without the fireworks?

And there's that whole Cirque du Soliel thing. Wassup with that?

Anyway, some people expect a big show, and woe be unto those who fail to provide it.

7. There are very few artists I would spend $$ and go see live...
too many singers rely on outside gimmicks to distract from the fact that they cannot sing - Pink is not one of them, she was AMAZING!

about you or me. It's about the people who DO pay for those overpriced tickets.

Entertainment is not necessarily synonomous with the ability to sing or dance. It could be, but doesn't have to be.

(I fear the day when someone outPinks Pink or outGaGas GaGa.)

42. Funny you should mention Ms. GaGa...
When I first saw the videos of that performance, I didn't hear who it was, and I assumed it was Lady GaGa. I kind of admire the moxie of the both of the, actually, even if I'm not a fan of their music.

5. You have to see it
It was really fun to watch. She knew what she was doing, apparently she has been training and learning to do this and she did a terrific job of it.
There have been some stupid numbers in the past with the artists riding crescent moons etc but this was not that.

with no flailing at all. Well done, Pink! Much better than all those robotic pyrotechnics by some divas.

9. modern music has become performance art
Apparently playing music isn't enough anymore you have to entertain the masses. Although I did like the performance art of the Talking Heads.

14. Green Day won a grammy and got to perform (although who were they singing with?)
That's about all I cared about with the Grammys

Even the Michael Jackson tribute annoyed me but that's the general feeling I get anytime Celine Dion is involved with something.

Pink's performance was actually quite engaging... unlike the utter crap-fests unleashed by the likes of Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas.

Besides, I will always love Pink for 'Dear Mr. President'

She is a great singer and a great entertainer, and if she wants to show what a badass she is, no problems from me. For anyone who thinks that a person sitting in jeans and a T-shirt has not also put a lot of time and consideration into their costume and act, then you're only buying the hype.

24. In Pink's defense, those close up photos are unfair. Her dance routine was meant to be appreciated
at a reasonable distance where she was more a silhouette among other silhouettes. Reminded me of a ballet.

25. OK, I guess I am old and cranky :)
Sounds like you had to see it to really appreciate it and the photos didn't do her performance justice.

And I agree - yes, it is "entertainment" - but Pink's talented anyway - doesn't seem to be a need for her to do stunt work b/c she really can sing.

27. Actually, this type of Aerial performance is an up and coming trend
A friend of mine is studying this type of performance, and really loves it... it's crazy the moves they'll do over concrete with no net!

So, Pink may be taking a class in this and decided to include it in her act... she's always been extremely fit.

Or would you prefer she do pole dancing?

31. She did trapeze at the MTV music awards
I liked her performance, but mostly because the song stood up to it. The song was gorgeous and the performance didn't take away from it, it just enhanced it. I thought the Black-Eyed Peas were boring. In fact, I don't know why everyone was doing medleys. It really didn't work. Beyonce was so so. Very polished but the material was bleh. The 3-D thing hurt my eyes, but I have to say, Smokey Robinson was astonishing. How can he still sound so great?

33. Not even familiar with her songs and it was the best performance at the Grammies.
Took a lot of work to do that. Wow. And I have seen Cirque many times and this was a mature, sensual, athletic and great performance. It had a certain mature artistic quality to it. Yes... got some attention but I feel it was well deserved. Song was really beautiful. Nice voice.

I'm not actually a Pink fan but I respect her and that was just awesome. It's a lovely art form, movement, song, something for the eyes and ears as well. "Flailing" sounds uncontrolled and without purpose.

I'd love to know about that water, though. Did they get everyone to sign something saying it was okay if their designer duds got soaked?
