22. Oh, dear.
I hope you still had a good time.
You must be new to the nonprofit/charity world. These groups are the only ones that I know of who use the word "gala." I also learned that you are supposed to pronounce it, gah-la, even the dictionary favors the gay-la pronunciation.

25. no, not new.
just that this is new wording for this group. the socialites moved in, and took over. they are gone, after one year, and us old timers are still around, and still stuck with their stupid word.
i guess it wouldn't bother me so much if it weren't for the fact that the title is- gala event. ugh. snooty AND redundant.

31. I wonder if "gah-la" is political correctness gone over-the-edge...
.
...like when one of the other planets was BIG news and the networks
all changed the pronunciation from yer-AY-nus to YUR-uh-ness.
.
So freakin' much blooper material killed before it had a chance.
.
.
(COULD be homophobia gone over-the-edge... but that's really reaching.)
.

32. No, not political correctness
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 05:28 PM by Sanity Claws
The gah-la pronunciation is due to "Larchmont lockjaw." Larchmont is a snooty town in Westchester; its stereotyped uppercrust resident is someone who talks without moving his/her mouth. They sound like the Howells on Gilligan's Island.

27. Well it's not as stuffy as a Cotillion and not as fancy as a Ball
I think of a Gala more like a fancy "Mardi Gras" type event.... Big Poufy Dresses but great music you can really dance to with your shoes off.....
