Red Dawn in a really crappy movie.
It came out when I was in middle or high school, but I never saw it. All my friends said it was so great. I just watched it on G4 instead of doing my laundry or going to the grocery story like I was supposed to. And you know what?

Poor lighting, poor sound quality, weak character differentiation, lame special effects, unimpressive dialogue.

I mean, other than a cool premise, it pretty much sucked in the execution phase.

Thoughts?

1. Thats what makes it a classic
I am not looking forward to the big budget remake however.

2. Who would the enomy be in the big budget makeover?
Afghanistan, Iraq? That wouldn't be believable. I think it would have to be China.

11. But China was on our side in the original.
One of the best exchanges in the movie:

Kid: "Who IS on our side?"
Pilot: "800 million screamin' Chinamen!"
Kid: "I thought there were a billion screamin' Chinamen."
Pilot: "There were."

3. Let me put it this way: the movie was made by John Milus
John Milus is the real life person the Walter Sobchek character from Big Lebowski was based on

Nuff said

5. You don't understand - John Milius had nothing to do with Lebowski, except he inspired Sobchek
If you look at his film credits, you get the picture

18. I agree.
Although Road House was ridiculous, if I recall correctly, at least it had a soundtrack, and professional lighting.

16. I was in the Army stationed in Germany when this came out.
I loved it, watched it over and over and over. I especially liked the girl who fell for the
pilot. I understood that really well.

17. It's a great movie. I saw it way back in the theater.
The action was there. Where Rambo II had only 1 replica Hind helicopter, Red Dawn employed 3 replica Hind helicopters.

Freaking cool.

Wolverines!

20. Maybe it translates better on the big screen.
Because i found it just couldn't hold my attention. I wanted more action, more plot, more C. Thomas Howell.

21. It was during a pretty wild time during the Cold War, I remember clearly
I was stationed in Texas then, we had invaded Grenada the year before.

One time, the Air Force sent a propaganda team to the base and we all sat in the base theater to see a presentation/briefing about how bad the Godless Russians were. There was even one guy dressed up in a Russian uniform and he was telling us all about the Commie's wonderful motivation behind their efforts to scare the living shit out of America.

Reagan's Pentagon had thrown out a bunch of lies about the so-called effectiveness of Russian missiles, all so they could sell Star Wars to the rubes.

And St. Ronnie his damn self was scaring up the folks about how the Sandinistas were about to roll into Texas.

Then we had Red Dawn...

Boy, were those fun times.
