Elvis would be 75 today

Give me Sun Records Elvis or '68 Comeback Special Elvis, and I can leave the rest alone.

1. You're missing out on a lot of good stuff if you only want those.
His early RCA stuff was just as raunchy and rockin' as the Sun stuff. He did some great recordings in the early/mid 60s that were for any of the movie soundtracks and there are even some great gem here and there in the movie soundtracks.

When he went back into the studio in 68, he recorded a huge collection of some great tunes within weeks. Some of those at those sessions were Kentucky Rain, Suspicious Minds, Don't Cry Daddy and some other really great, not as well-known, cuts.

His recording output in the 70s wasn't really as strong, but his antics were pretty "rock and roll"

2. I know all that stuff
But I prefer what I prefer. I enjoy a few of his tunes from RCA and the film soundtracks, but not enough to think they cement his legacy the way his very first recordings did.

Do you remember DUer Forrest Gump? That man is a virtual Elvis encyclopedia. Like you, he loves a broad swath of the Elvis catalogue. :-)

3. Yeah, I remember Forrest
We had a few good discussions on Elvis and then he disappeared. I'm sure he'll be back...he seems to always come back. He was in the middle of making me a load of cd's, I wonder if he finished them..lol.

And I didn't mean to sound like I knew what you should like musically. :) I was sort of speaking "in general". For example, the 68 show was good, but not even close to the music he recorded around that same time. I think people just think it was cool that he came out in leather and kicked some ass on that show, but to me it was just an hour of greatest hits.

4. I agree with you about the '68 recordings
I think the entire year was a comeback, in that context. When you think of all the turmoil and strife from 1968, as well as the groundbreaking recordings from the contemporary artists of that year, it was a timely return to form from what was then the Biggest of The Old Guard.

No worries - I myself am known for a strongly worded musical opinion or two on these very boards. This should go much smoother than any sports thread, anyway, lol.

5. Not if he was above ground.
More like 19 degrees.

It's cold in the South today.

6. If we really thought about that we'd be glad he's dead.
I'm sorry, did I say that aloud?
