So "The Karate Kid" is being "remade".
To star Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son). I normally loathe teen angst flicks, but it looks like this one has a real chance to pull it off with some style.

7. HOW COULD IT be the "KARATE KID" WITH Jackie Chan?
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 06:11 PM by AsahinaKimi
Maybe the "kung fu" kid. Karate is a Japanese Art, Jackie Chan is Chinese (Kung Fu). Stupid baka yarou Hollywood!!!
They still can't tell the difference between One Asian group over another!! Or if they can...they don't give a damn.

10. I remember how Noriyuke Morita used to turn up in all sorts of guises...
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 09:55 PM by Kutjara
...during the 70s and 80s. He seemed to play Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Korean characters as often as he played Japanese. And remember, Bruce Lee was "Kato" in "The Green Hornet," who was supposed to be Japanese.

Hollywood has a long and ignoble history of casting Asian actors as if they're interchangeable. On the other hand, I suppose it's a small step up from the previous policy of painting Anglo actors with "Oriental" makeup and hoping nobody would notice. Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made me cringe when I was eight years old. And Warner Oland's schtick as Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan wouldn't fool a blind person.

11. They did that with Memoirs of a Geisha
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 10:08 PM by AsahinaKimi
Both Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh are Chinese, and so they used them as Japanese because they were both popular at the time.

There are plenty of Japanese actors,~~ Clint Eastwood never had a problem finding them (Letters from Iwo Jima).

I thought they probably could have found some if they had looked. Bring them over from Japan if necessary. There are some wonderful actors there. Don't get me wrong, I love both Yeoh and Zhang. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will always remain one of my top favorite movies.

Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 01:19 AM by Kutjara
...but I take your point. Watching a Chinese actor play a Japanese character is very distracting.

Michelle Yeoh was even sillier casting. While she is ethnic Chinese, she's actually Malaysian by birth.

16. Great novel, horrible movie
I'm still pissed off about the "artistic license" and casting that went into that particular movie. You're right about the amount of amazing Japanese actors available for it though.

20. There was a novel? Before the movie? That's news to me!
Wiki doesn't mention it, and Amazon indicates that it's out of print, with a new copy of the paperback listing for $383.57!

Was there some big campaign to suppress it? Damn you, Pat Morita! DAMN YOU!

Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 01:35 AM by AsahinaKimi
Who could have played the part. (I love Jdorama and Japanese Movies.) However, because they have no STAR POWER here, Hollywood says, no. Why not do what Hollywood has done in the past, INTRODUCE new talent to the USA shores by bringing well established Japanese actors here.

You want some examples? How about Aya Ueto?

Here is another..
Miho Kanno

Here is another..
Tomoko Yamaguchi

Here is another
Takako Tokiwa

Here is another ..
Matsushima Nanako

And finally
Nakama Yukie

There are plenty more...All Seasoned actors, who wouldn't have broken a sweat doing an American film, AND they
Speak English.

21. And also Alec Guiness in A Majority of One
In his autobiography George Takei wrote of his attempts to get Guiness, who played his father, not to play his character so stereotypically .

Guiness later portrayed an Indian man and a blue eyed arabian prince. I also suspect he may have been only a quarter jedi.

I always wondered how someone could be made to look asian and stand around actual asian people without feeling a little odd.

17. Is there some reason that Jackie Chan couldn't play a character skilled at karate?
I mean, that's what Pat Morita did.

Are we sure that Chan will be playing a Japanese character?

26. Hollywood goes for Star power; That is why they got J.Lo , A Puerto Rican to play Selena
(a Mexican American) or Penelope Cruz(A Spaniard) to play a Mexican in Bandidas or Gael Garcia Bernal(a Mexican) to play Che(An Argentinian ).I have noticed that it is mainly other Latinos who get upset when confused with Mexicans (for some reason we just dont care except for my boss who is of the firm belief that all other Latinos are Banana F*ckers) IWhat pissed me off was Natalie Wood in Westside Story and Kathrine Hepburn playing a Chinese Woman.

I think they got Jackie Chan because of his star power. They even reworked it so it was set in China. They probably wanted to keep the brand name alive though

I am of Hispanic Descent but have studied Kung Fu. Perhaps those of Chinese descent have studied Karate or those of Japanese descent have studied kung fu

28. Jackie Chan as Miyagi? HELL no.
Despite all of his martial arts abilities, when it comes to acting ability, Jackie Chan knows how to play ONE role.

Jackie Chan. He's Mel Gibson with karate moves...a showboat. The late Pat Morita had a sense of cool. That's what made the "Miyagi" role memorable.

Once again, I go back to one of David Spade's bits on SNL, at a time when "tribute" albums were all the rage, and the "A" list players had been exhausted, and the trend went to "B" and then "C" listers.

An exasperated Spade asked "Do you know WHY The Beatles recorded all of those songs?"

Pause...

..."So YOU wouldn't HAVE to."

That's why Karate Kid I-III were made.

So that Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith wouldn't have to.

32. Apparantley his name his Mr Han in this movie
The plot is some kid and his mom move to china and the kid gets picked on by all the chinese kids so he meets Jackie Chan and Jackie Chan teaches him to fight.

They shouldnt call it a Karate Kid remake. Just call it another movie that kinda sounds like Karate Kid.
