Can I just say I hate Gmail with a passion?
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 01:50 PM by grace0418
One of my clients set me up with a gmail account when I work with them. I cannot tell you how much I hate the way gmail groups emails together into totally nonsensical "conversations". Some things that have no relation to each other are grouped together, but other emails that should be grouped together are not. It doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason.

What's even worse: I completely missed an assignment last week because the work request got grouped with some emails from three weeks ago (and was marked as read) so I never saw it. Suddenly, the day *after* the project was due, a whole thread of emails from my client popped to the top of my inbox (now marked as unread) that said "Let me know if you can get this done," "Grace, are you able to do this job?" "Since I didn't hear from you I reassigned the project to someone else. Can you send them your files?"

Fucking Gmail. Made me look like a jerk *AND* lost me a bunch of money. I apologized profusely but I still look like a jerk.

6. I only use mac.com mail on my computer, but thanks for the link.
I noticed that when I access gmail from my phone, I see it as any other standard email program would list the emails, but for some reason I often get errors when I try to open the emails on my phone. My mac.com, and yahoo.com email accounts open just fine on my phone, it's just my gmail account that gives those errors. And I have a GOOGLE phone! I wonder if it gets messed up because I had to open a personal gmail account when I bought the phone. So I have two gmail accounts and maybe that's just too much for the phone to handle. The ONLY thing I use my personal gmail account is for the contacts, because it links directly to my phone. Otherwise I send zero messages from that account.

2. I've adjusted to it, for the most part
but if it is a real problem for you, you're not alone

try suggesting changing it here:

7. Well, I just found it annoying until it actually caused me to lose work. That's when
I got ticked. Thanks for the link. I will be writing to them. They should at least have the option to turn that damn "conversation" bundling feature off and allow users to look at it like any other email program.

3. Have you set up a bunch of filters or something?
G-mail just presents my messages in chronological order, newest ones at the top...

If it's a back and forth exchange, it groups those together, but that seems perfectly logical to me. And when there's a new response, the "thread" pops to the top as Unread.

Maybe the problem is stemming from dealing with multiple recipients responding to the sender?

Sorry you lost the gig. Why are you relying on your client to set you up with gmail?

FWIW, I DO find that Gmail and Yahoo both seem to catch virtually all spam, while my "real" ISP can't even seem to block messages with the word "Viagra" in them. I've considered switching business accounts to gmail just for that reason.

5. No filters, and believe me, I'd prefer to use my own perfectly good
and easy-to-use mac.com email account that I use with all my other clients. This client in particular likes all the offsite freelancers to use gmail accounts for some unknown reason. We're all CompanyNameDepartmentName01@gmail.com, ...02@gmail.com, etc. Easier to keep track of us maybe, I don't know. I haven't set up any filters or anything special at all. I use it as little as I possibly can actually.

I have a yahoo account and have no problem with it. It's just gmail. I can be sending a back and forth exchange to the same three people with the same subject line and it won't always group it into a conversation. But other things that share nothing in common will sometimes get randomly grouped together. Then other times it works like you would imagine it should. It's maddening.

4. As a non-technie of the lowest order, I only use the "IN" box and the Trash, nothing else
However I set myself up with Windows Mail plus Gmail, I have no earthly idea. But it's given me zero problems, beyond that the messages are cloying ("Our servers are feeling UNLOVED"). If it ever needs to be set up again, I will be in the usual tizzy. But no problems.

8. I try to use it as little as possible but my client requires it so I do it.
The other thing I hate is when you're writing an email and you just want to check something in another email, you have to save the email you're composing as a draft, close it, open the other email, check it, then reopen the email you were composing. In yahoo and mac, the email you're composing is a separate tab, so you can click away from it and back to it at will.

14. I wish you could just turn that conversation grouping off. I still wouldn't
love gmail but at least I wouldn't loathe it so much.

13. Thank god I'm not the only one!
GMail is complete garbage, and I'm glad someone finally stood up and said something.

If people knew how truly invasive Google is, they wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
