What is your favorite brand of sauerkraut?
Mine is easily Rossoff's, but that's hard to find around here. Silver Floss is available and that's a reasonable second place. Rossoff's also has the best pickles, but Clausen is what I can get around here. I keep my eyes open.

So, what is your favorite brand of sauerkraut?

1. It's a brand that is sold in a glass jar.

Could it be Meyer's?

My Mom used to make spareribs and sauerkraut. Yummy!

on edit: Thank you for putting sauerkraut into my head. I am now surfing the internet for recipes and brands. :-)

2. Rossoff's is in a glass jar as well. Sometimes you can find the stuff in a plastic bag.
I forget what brand comes in the plastic bag, but it was pretty damn good. Silver Floss is in a can, but it is the crisp white kind like the ones in the jars.

As for recipe's, if the sauerkraut is of high quality all I ever add is a liberal sprinkling of caraway seeds. When I was a kid, all we got was the nasty yellow shit that tasted like vinegar and nothing else. The main recipe was "a shitload of brown sugar". Of course, that's also when they put mini marshmallows in waldorf salad, coated mashed sweet potatoes in marshmallows, and cooked acorn squash with a few pounds of butter and a shitload of brown sugar. NONE of those are necessary.

3. Morse's - they're local too :)
http://www.morsessauerkraut.com/

For generations these 2 words in tiny newspaper ads and on a small sign hung on the door of the sturdy block Kraut Haus on Rte. 220 in Waldoboro have called countless Mainers to a fall tradition. Whether drawn by long-forgotten German roots common in the midcoast, or habit borne of generations, Morse's Sauerkraut has been a part of autumn in Maine for nearly a century.

The only difference today is that this once “fall-only” treat is now available year-round. If you're “from away” this is NOT your father's sauerkraut! Our fresh 'kraut made with Maine-grown cabbage has no preservatives and is hand packed with its own brine straight from the same barrel in which the raw cabbage fermented and became this wonderful product. The unadulterated and non-pasteurized fresh 'kraut differs from all processed sauerkraut partly because the state of fermentation continues into the packaging of your individual order. With our fresh 'kraut your palate will experience a range of flavors over its 6-8 week shelf life span. In its early stages, young 'kraut will have a crispy, crunchy texture and the brine, a slightly sweet taste. As the 'kraut cures and undergoes aging, the brine becomes more acidic creating a tangy, zippier flavor. No matter when you choose to eat it, you'll find our fresh 'kraut bears no resemblance to its mushy processed substitute.

6. I can get fresh kraut here too, and it's a whole different food than the supermarket stuff.
When I can't find it, I buy Bubbie's.

I've disliked all other sauerkrauts I've had, but I love this brand.

7. Keep an eye out for Sabrett's--as in the hot dog manufacturer
In the one store where I saw it, it was with the hot dogs. I don't know if it's any good. Silver Floss is about all we can get here. At least as far as fresh goes. It's good enough. I haven't really looked at what comes in jars or cans, although I'm pretty sure we have Clausen, as well.
