So I bought "Modern Warfare 2" two days ago...
It is the game that is the most popular on Xbox Live right now, and I thought it would last long before people would put it on the shelf. So,since I wanted to get it quickly, I convinced my mother to let my grandfather drive me to Gamestop to purchase it.Two of my cousins who I grew up with, recently received an Xbox 360, so I was excited to play this game with them(My brother and I mostly play Halo 3, but I hadn't really played a new video game in a long time). When I finally bought the game (and went back home),I was pretty nervous when I tried to remove the disc from its circular holder, for it seemed to be pretty tight.Luckily,I removed the (seemingly undamaged) disc from the prison in it was held, and I replaced the Halo 3 disc in my 360 with my newly purchased possession. As my console read the disc, I was immediately greeted with:

"This disc is unreadable.

1.Clean the disc with a soft cloth.
2.Restart the console

www.xbox.com/support "

My initial response was to eject and reject the tray again and again for the console to read, but all I get is the above notification. Sometimes,my 360 doesn't even bother to read the disc and all I see is the option "Open Tray." I suspected that there was a problem with my Xbox itself, but my Halo 3 disc still works without a problem at all.I suspect that it may be a problem with the Gamestop store itself, but they say they rarely see this happen with new discs.

Today,my grandfather drove me to Gamestop again to exchange the game for another copy. When I returned home,I was again treated with this dilemma when I inserted my new copy into my console.

Could you offer me some advice on what to do ? This is turning me into a communist more and more as I contemplate what is happening.

1. Did the Gamestop try to play the disc when you returned it?
I think that's the only way to determine disc v. console. If the disc works elsewhere, it's your console. If the disc doesn't work, it's the disc. Do you know anyone else around you with the same console you could try it in?

Did you actually restart the console?

3. My grandfather asked if they could "check it out."
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 04:39 PM by Progressivism
They said they couldn't,and that if the new disc didn't work, that there may be a problem with the system itself.

Edit: Oh,and I have no one else around.

5. That's BS, of course GS has a way to spin it they just don't want to issue a replacement...
and do the follow-up paperwork in their retail stream - it's lazy, and really depends from store to store on who is interested in retaining customers

6. Doesn't Gamestop buy used games and resell them?
I find it hard to believe they take in used games but have no way to test them out. Hmph.

2. First you have to complete the "Make this Disc Playable" Mission
Once you get past that it's smooth sailing.

Wait til you get to the Airport Mission.

It'll knock your socks off.

ps: Ignore the Vegan One's advice. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

4. It sounds like your DVD drive is dying. I had that happen before.
Here's a link to a few tutorials, you might be able to fix it. Try the easiest thing first, use a dvd cleaner to clean the lens and see if that helps. The DVD drives they put in the xbox are absolute crap, so yours might be dead. You can try and replace the drive or you might have to get another xbox.

7. Buy a PS3.
or join the army and do it for real in afghanistan. Or just give up playing, and spend more time with your grandfather.

Dunno. I hate those situations where there does not seem to be any logical reason. You know the player works via the other game. And you have tried two new discs, so it shouldnt be that.

13. Watch out, you'll attract all the video game haters because of the game.
There are some posters here on DU that would like to ban all "violent" recreational activities, even violent video games.

16. Present and accounted for.

Truthfully, I would like to see all the violent games go away. I think there are other ways to test one's skills and engage one's imagination than playing violent shoot'em up games, even in the video game realm. There's enough violence in the world without making it seem a normal state by inserting it into play.

And you know what, I'm allowed to hold that opinion. So, there!

14. I returned the game to Gamestop again and exchanged it for another copy.
It didn't work again !My mother and I called Microsoft and we did several troubleshooting attempts that the responder (working at the Philippines) told us to do.It may specifically be a problem with the disc,or it may be that the console just won't read this particular game, which will necessitate repair.

P.S Technically, it is my fifteenth birthday today since I was born in the Philippines on the 27th.

15. I don't know much about X-Box's,
But could it be the X-Box that's acting up?

I know X-Box's have the RRoD problem.

17. UPDATE:We returned the copy to the store and they gave us store credit in return.
I found out that when certain games are unreadable on your 360, then that is a sign of it breaking down.Thankfully,my mother bought a new 360 for me as a present and we rented a copy of the game in question from Blockbuster.Thankfully(again) it actually worked on our new Xbox and I finally got to play the game for the first time.(it's also the first game in the "Call of Duty" series that I own.)
