1. Did it and it worked for awhile
Best not to do a diet at all.

Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.

Drink lots of water. Moderate exercise. Cut back on meat protein. Less than 3 portions a week. Lots of fruit, lots of vegetables. Drink wine

Don't look at food as medicine. Enjoy what you eat.

2. I've known a lot of "Atkins heads" - they all got even fatter.
The problem isn't with the Atkins diet itself, but rather the common interpretation: "Eat as much meat as you want and nothing else".

Of course, that isn't at all what it is about, but that interpretation appeals to fat meat eaters who want to eat nothing but meat. As I said, they all got even fatter, and that isn't a shock given the crap they were eating. A "wrap" dripping with fat and grease isn't much different than a sub roll dripping the same stuff. Burger King even offered fatty meat in a cup instead of fatty meat on a bun.

Curiously, Bloom County predicted the Atkins diet back in the early 80's. There's a Sunday strip where Milo is in a top hat and orders a Whopper, hold the bun. The slacker behind the counter says, "You can't have it without a bun." Milo goes on a tirade about "have it your way" and ends with "By God, let Reagan be Reagan." The slacker hands him a dripping bag, "One Whopper, sans bun." Milo responds, "Fine, milkshake hold the cup."

Anyway, apparently those who follow the REAL Atkins diet do lose weight initially, but generally don't keep it off. That's true of most fad diets, so Atkins isn't really that different. If you really want to get to and maintain a healthy weight, stick with vegetables and avoid fats. It is a simple rule and easy to follow.

3. My dear applegrove...
I agree with GoneOffShore...

Much better to take that advice, and increase your exercise.

Do what you can live with over the long haul, and enjoy!

4. It worked for me, at least for awhile.
The problem is that when you go back to eating normally you tend to gain the weight back. I don't think it's a very healthful diet to be on for an extended period of time either. And I got really sick of meat, too.

7. It's good for short term weight loss, but definitely not a long term thing
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 12:44 AM by Sebastian Doyle
For the long term, rather than eliminating all carbs, just eliminate the worst carbs. High fructose corn poison and bleached white flour being the worst of all. Basically, the less refined a carbohydrate is, the less chance there is that its gonna go straight into the bloodstream and then stored in the fat cells.

8. i had to give up dietary starch COMPLETELY for several years, due to my autoimmune condition.
i have ankylosing spondylitis, and when it in an activwe state, your body is basically allergic to starch(actually it's because of the enzyme that's being created due to the bacteria that digests the starch- or something to that effect)
when i gave up starch, i lost 60 pounds in less than three months.

here is a FANTASTIC starch-free/low starch cookbook book by a woman from new zealand who was diagnosed with irritable-bowel-syndrome, and determined herself that starch in her diet was causing her problems. as it turned out, she actually has ankylosing spondylitis.

http://www.amazon.com/IBS-Low-Starch-Diet-Starchy-Hazardous/dp/0091912865/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

best of luck with the diet-
seeing as human beings are hunter-gatherers by nature- starch is not really a natural part of the human diet.

10. Don't do it!!
It works great at the beginning--you'll lose a ton of weight, but as soon as you start to reintroduce carbs, you'll pork up and gain more than you lost.
