1. Interestingly, I was reading an article on this today...

the very topic, except in Bizarro-world kind of.

Apparently one of the foremost arguments made in its day about extending rights to women was that if we gave women rights and suffrage, that someday we'd have to extend those same rights to animals...since it was apparent that animals had no rights, we clearly have no moral necessity to extend rights to women.

It seems absurd now when one reads it, how anybody could have ever believed that this was the logical crux of a prominent argument against women having any rights under US law.

Unfortunately, it was an article in a print newsletter I got from PeTA so I have no way to link it. It was truly one of the most strangely-enlightening things I ever read.
