5. I have a stack of vinyl albums
whose scratches and scritches are as evocative as the music. Eclectic, tilting to the standards; Julie Andrews on a couple of them, love that voice. Some of my earliest memories are of midnight mass, and I still love the choirs and pipe organ along with the colors and candlelight. Nutcracker Suite, of course. The more recent pieces I enjoy: "Mary, Did You Know?"; "We Three Kings/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Barenaked Ladies with Sarah MacLachlan (although the album is a major disappointment).

15. album in the broad sense of the word
An album or record album is a collection of related audio or music tracks distributed to the public. An album may be released in a single format, such as on compact disc, or in multiple media formats, ranging from physical ones such as CDs, DVD audio, cassettes and vinyl records, to digital ones such as MP3 and AAC files or streaming audio.

12. Most of my favorites would be compliation albums
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 04:18 PM by Sebastian Doyle

Some of the greatest Holiday tunes you ever heard from The Dickies, The Ramones, Fear, The Damned, and a "supergroup" made up of members of the Sex Pistols & Thin Lizzy called "The Greedies" (originally it was "The Greedy Bastards" but they couldn't get any airplay from the BBC with that name.

Their contribution - "A Merry Jingle" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN2bcS9shuY

1. Punk Rock Christmas, (It's Gonna Be A) - Ravers
2. Silent Night - The Dickies
3. Hooray For Santa Claus (Theme From "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians") - Sloppy Seconds (CD only)
4. Fuck Christmas - Fear
5. Merry Jingle, A - The Greedies
6. There Ain't No Sanity Claus - The Damned
7. Homo Christmas - Pansy Division
8. It's Christmas - Bouquet Of Veal (CD only)
9. Merry Xmas Blues - The Celibate Rifles (CD only)
10. Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight) - The Ramones (UK single version)
11. Deck the Halls - Metal Mike/Alison & Julia
12. Feliz Navi-Nada - El Vez
13. Run, Run Rudolph - The Humpers (CD only)
14. Daddy Drank Our Xmas Money - TVTV$ (CD only)
15. Here Comes Santa's Pussy - The Frogs (CD only)
16. Christmas Christmas - Mojo Nixon
17. Mr. Grinch - D.I.
18. White Christmas - Stiff Little Fingers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Look at that lineup...... Though I would have rather they included the Keith Richards version of "Run Rudolph Run", which is better than the Dave Edmunds version.

Keith's version here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym62kKIydo8

Probably one of the greatest Xmas compilations ever. Even if you never heard of half of these bands, the renditions of the familiar holiday classics are well worth the listen

1. "Little Drummer Boy" - Hoodoo Gurus — 2:24
2. "The First Noel" - Crash Test Dummies — 3:42
3. "Step Into Christmas" - The Wedding Present (originally recorded by Elton John) — 4:48
4. "Blue X-mas (To Whom It May Concern)" - Drunken Boat (originally recorded by Miles Davis) — 4:19
5. "O Holy Night" - Divine Weeks — 4:52
6. "Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" - Carnival Art — 4:00
7. "Silent Night" - The Primitives — 2:12
8. "O Little Town of Bethlehem" - Young Fresh Fellows — 2:55
9. "We Three Kings of Orient" - The Odds — 4:29
10. "Here Comes Santa Claus" - Clockhammer — 2:34
11. "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" - Henry Rollins — 4:08

Here's Henry from that album - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFUgRRYmLvk

Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 07:09 PM by TommyO
Ally McBeal: A Very Ally Christmas, mainly for Vonda Shepard's singing, but also for Robert Downey Jr's surprisingly good job at "River", definitely not for Calista Flockhart's pathetic "Santa Baby."

Barenaked Ladies: Barenaked for the Holidays.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra: Boogie Woogie Christmas and Dig That Crazy Christmas

Vince Guaraldi Trio: A Charlie Brown Christmas

Chris Isaak: Christmas

Ella Fitzgerald: Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas

South Park: Mr, Hankey's Christmas Classics, a wonderful skewering of traditional and new classics. Swiss Colony Beef Log gets me rocking out, and who can resist lyrics like, "Courtney Cox, I love you, you're so hot, on that show?"

Melissa Etheridge: A New Thought for Christmas

Los Straitjackets" 'Tis the Season for Los Straitjackets

32. I second that one!
Besides the more traditional stuff -- "Past Three O'Clock," etc. -- there's a lively version of "The Boar's Head Carol," which I never tire of.

Then there's the decidedly DU-friendly "St. Stephen's Day Murders" by Elvis Costello and "The Rebel Jesus" by Jackson Browne.

I can listen to that album again and again.

40. You mentioned two of my faves....
"St. Stephen's Day Murders" is the defining antidote to holiday smaltz, and "Rebel Jesus" is lovely.

The rest of the CD is indeed a fabulous mix of artists and songs. "Royal David's City" by that boy's choir give me goosebumps, and those French carols are wonderful.

Now if I could just find my copy of 'Bells of Dublin' after moving!

39. Ultra-Lounge: Christmas Cocktails
It was out of print for a while but it's available again, and there's two more albums that I'll have to check out now. Years ago I was stopped at a Thruway service area at night in December with a bunch of guys from work, on our way back from a disaster-recovery test in New Jersey. The selection being played on their PA system was just the creepiest version of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies I'd ever heard. I tracked it down to this album.

1. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Mambo - Billy May
2. Winter Wonderland - Peggy Lee
3. Christmas Trumpets/We Wish You a Very Merry Christmas - Ray Anthony
4. Christmas Is - Lou Rawls
5. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town/White Christmas - Jimmy McGriff
6. I'd Like You for Christmas - Julie London
7. Holiday on Skis - Al Caiola, Riz Ortolani
8. (Everybody's Waitin' For) The Man with the Bag - Kay Starr
9. Jingle Bells/Jingle Bell Rock - The Hollyridge Strings
10. I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm - Dean Martin
11. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus/Jingle Bells Bossa Nova - Eddie Dunstedter
12. Christmas Kisses - Ray Anthony
13. I'll Be Home for Christmas/Baby, It's Cold Outside - Jackie Gleason, Jack Marshall
14. What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? - Nancy Wilson
15. Cha-Cha All the Way - The Capitol Orchestra
16. Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
17. Nutcracker Suite - Les Brown & His Band of Renown
18. Ring Those Christmas Bells - Pennsylvanians, Fred Waring, Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians, Fred Waring
