3. Blue city in a red state
New Orleans fits into that category. There are plenty of "blue state" attractions in N.O.:

Jazz clubs
Goth bars
Independent films
The French Quarter (with the exception of Bourbon Street, which is lame, and has become filled with obnoxious red state, feeeper types)
Coffee houses
Audubon park
Whole Foods
Outdoor markets
Jackson Square (which is actually part of the Quarter)
A slew of very authentic, Middle Eastern restauraunts
The universities are also major assets
