1. American Skin (41 Shots)
This song makes me choke up every time I hear it. I think it is one of the best songs ever written.

American Skin

41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots
41 shots....
and we`ll take that ride
`cross this bloody river
to the other side
41 shots... cut through the night
You`re kneeling over his body in the vestibule
Praying for his life

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain`t no secret
It ain`t no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

41 shots
Lena gets her son ready for school
She says `on these streets, Charles
You`ve got to understand the rules
If an officer stops you
Promise you`ll always be polite,
that you`ll never ever run away
Promise Mama you`ll keep your hands in sight`

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain`t no secret
It ain`t no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it in your heart, is it in your eyes
It ain`t no secret

41 shots... and we`ll take that ride
`Cross this bloody river
To the other side
41 shots... got my boots caked in this mud
We`re baptized in these waters and in each other`s blood

Is it a gun, is it a knife
Is it a wallet, this is your life
It ain`t no secret
It ain`t no secret
No secret my friend
You can get killed just for living
In your American skin

2. 25 years ago I was on a long drive on a business trip in IL ...
The DJ did a set of "The Best of Bruce Springsteen". I decided to listen. I was actually quite shocked. The band was REALLY GOOD! All they needed was someone who could sing.

3. The "Live at Tramps" version of "Murder Incorporated"...the one played on MTV.
Edited on Tue Dec-01-09 09:33 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jolPB0j7Bhk

For me, it IS NOT THE SONG...it is THIS VERSION OF THE SONG...I've heard two others, one studio, one live.

It's THIS VERSION or NO VERSION.

THIS is "my" Boss song.

Clemmons' solo...at the 2:08 mark.

Bruce's solo...at the 2:28 mark.

Bruce's vocal at the 3:00 mark.

The 3:39 mark.

Bruce's second solo at the 4:15 mark.

Little Steven at the 4:47 mark, guitar raised, dancing joyously to the chaos.

THIS version.

:toast:

7. "I'm on Fire" and "Adam Raised a Cain"
"At night I wake up with the sheets soakin' wet and a freight train runnin' through the middle of my head..."

vs.

"Daddy worked his whole life for nothin' but the pain, now he haunts these empty rooms lookin' for somethin' to blame..."

Dammit, I can't decide!

11. "My Hometown" from Born In The USA
Look at the picture he paints of the hometown his dad showed him compared to the one left for his own son:

I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
Id sit on his lap in that big old buick and steer as we drove through town
Hed tousle my hair and say son take a good look around
This is your hometown, this is your hometown
This is your hometown, this is your hometown

...

Now main streets whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there aint nobody wants to come down here no more
They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they aint coming back to
Your hometown, your hometown, your hometown, your hometown

...

Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said son take a good
Look around
This is your hometown

15. Thunder Road or Kitty's Back ( and maybe Backstreets or Promised Land too)
Edited on Wed Dec-02-09 01:24 AM by abq e streeter
with None But the Brave, Iceman, and Seaside Bar Song in the best of his obscure ones category, and Savin' Up (For The Things That Money Can't Buy) by Clarence's Red Bank Rockers, and Club Soul City and Your Love (Is Gonna Let You Down) by Gary U.S. Bonds in the songs Bruce wrote for others category...best album? I vacillate between Born To Run, Darkness, and The Wild The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle...OOPs--we were supposed to pick one each...I guess I narrowed it down to 10 songs and 3 albums; oh well.

19. Wasn't so crazy about him during the 80's and 90's
because by far his best work is his early stuff,

Jungleland is my favorite by a long shot as is Born to Run.

The River is his best later work.

22. Saw "Ghost" done Sunday night on the HBO Hall of Fame show, peekaboo
From MSG in late October. Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine joined in. One of THE best guitar solo's I've ever seen. I do not overstate that. If you get a chance..HBO will be running it again. You have to be patient. Comes three hours in.

24. Thanks.
I'll get my sis to tape it. :hi:

I saw Springsteen on a solo tour (95 or 96) and he played a good chunk of his solo releases. 'Ghost' and 'Semolina Cowboys' were both great live songs (as were the 'Nebraska' offerings).

Very, very similar. Jann Wenner called the solo 'an out of body experience'. I've heard it but never seen it. Morello is incredible.
Thanks for that.

29. Spirit in the Night
And a whole bunch, right on its heels. "The River" stops folks right in their tracks, sometimes, and "57 Channels" is a guilty pleasure.
