I just bought a external 1TB Hard Drive
I'm planning to use it to relieve my main hard drive of much needed space. What would you do with one? Any suggestions?

1. Me? I'd fill it up in about a day or so
Those things are really good for defragging purposes. I use them to dump all my files (especially the big media files that are typically very fragmented) and then delete them off my internal drive, defrag my drive and then copy them back (if I need access to them). They'll come back in the defrag'd state.

Basically I use my large external drives as my archive.

2. Store large data files on it.
Is it SATA or USB?

If it is SATA, you can keep your swap file on it.

3. It's USB.

It's built by Western Digital. The same company where I got my first external hard drive. My previous hard drive was 80 GB, which I will still use as a backup hard drive for dumping footage and pictures from the anime conventions I go to, as an insurance policy in case my laptop decides to commit suicide on me.

7. Keep an eye on it -
I have a Western Digital 320GB Passport that is less than a year old. I store camera raw files and jpeg's on it so my laptop doesn't get super clogged.
Three weeks ago it started whirring whenever I plugged it in. Transferred everything to a LaCie. The Western Digital is almost certainly on its last spin.

As a geek friend of mine always says - "Not if, when"

12. If it's less than a year old you can crack open the case,
pull the hard drive, and RMA it under the drive's limited warranty.

13. I know - but it's really not worth the time or effort
Which Western no doubt counts on.
Plus I'm not sure I registered the warranty and I know I can't find the receipt.

4. I have an external 1TB and an internal 1TB.
Those things are great - I have my entire music collection stored on my computer and I still have about 900 GB left.

5. I have mine partitioned
Use part of it for backups, part for overflow.

9. LOL!
I'm having flashbacks of when I bought my current machine, which is about seven years old or so. I remember thinking, "Eh. 40 GB should be way more than enough hard drive space. I'd NEVER fill that up!" Yeah right. That was long before I bought a digital camera...

10. Keep It Pruned
When you have a whole terabyte you think it's simply not possible to use up all that space. However, a TB is only a 1000 gigabytes, a limited amount. It's not as vast an expanse as you think. If you're not really sure you want to keep something, use a DVD burner.

11. Gotta have some place to keep all that porn.
Is it a problem if you have a wall full of external drives filled with porn?

14. What'd it cost you?
I'll be in the market for a new drive soon, since my 300-gig external drive is getting full, and there's not much on it that I can delete.

16. For mine I paid $99.
Totally worth it to have a hard drive dedicated to just my music. Last time my pc died my music went with it, so this is nice.

17. Neat.
That's what I paid for my 300-gig a few years back.

Ah, the ever-increasing pace of technology...

15. I use mine for music and music only.
I realize it'll take awhile to fill it with only music, but I'm well on my way. :)
