Wow. I did it! I surprised even myself!
I dropped internet access from my cell phone. I've had it on my phone for 3 years. Finally decided it was a waste of time and money.

I also dropped to the lowest text messaging plan.

I also dropped to the smallest channel package for my TV service through ATT (if I could order only the HD channel pack I'd do that in a heartbeat but I do love my HD History Channel and The Daily Show and Colbert, too. ;-) )

I also dropped my internet speed in half.

Saving myself over $50/mo. for stuff I won't miss at all.

Now if I could just really get in the habit of fixing dinner for my daughter and I as soon as I get home and fixing myself a lunch before I leave for work, I could save another $100/mo or more off my food bill by not going out to eat so much!

1. Smart move...
I'm sure I could save money if I got off roadrunner and cable and went to the phone company for DSL and TV, but I just hate the idea of having techs out to the house for the install.

Is it something I could do myself you think? Probably not, since I'd want TV where the cable jacks are, not where the phone jacks are.

3. Well, with AT&T and the apt. complex I'm in, it's easy to hook up add'l sets, if I wanted to.
It even runs back thru the coax outlets.

And I do have a new 50" plasma coming after Christmas (I had to sell off my old 55" set earlier this year)

I do like my movie experience...it's definitely my weak spot but it's a one-time expense that will last years.

It's those monthlies that add up and kill me.

2. I have a plan with 700 minutes shared for 5 phones - $107/mo.
Me, wife, and three daughters. Calls between our phones don't count against minutes. We don't do text, Internet, or other such silly trivialities. They keep calling to sell me a new plan, but when the sales rep looks at what I have they always say, "wow, I can't beat that with what I've got to offer."

Go simple.

5. I was paying $140/mo for 2 phones with 700 min.
All those internet/texting packages really get ya.

7. Fuck that noise! If you want to use the net, use a computer.
The cell phone business is based on P.T. Barnum's theory that there's a sucker born every minute.

I want a phone that can place a call and receive a call. Text messages are like McD's french fries. You keep consuming them and they make you fat. Free your mind.

8. Well, I was using it while I was out and about or during the day while at work

Couldn't surf on the work PC.

Finally realized I don't need to. It's just a big time-waster.

4. I'm really trying to cook at home more, too!
Like so many, my schedule is busy, busy and I find myself in the fast food drive through a lot. I'm really trying to cut that out not only for the money savings, but for the health reasons as well.

Good for you for prioritizing your life!

6. You can watch Colbert and The Daily Show online for free!
You can catch these shows the next day. Maybe you can save even more money by going to basic cable.

9. Well, I'm stuck on HDTV.
My set in my bedroom is a 30" CRT that cost me only $300 a few years ago. I just won't watch regular TV anymore. And watching things like Monk and psych on USA HD or shows on History is about all I watch (or sports...love my sports).

Having a DVR is really handy to record multiple shows to watch later and I guess I could get an antenna and an HD card for a PC and do a DIY DVR on a PC but that doesn't always work so smoothly.
