I have to go vote, with a resounding "MEH"
'Tis election day here in Manch Vegas. We're electing a new mayor, as well as members of the Board of Aldercritters and the School Board.

My candidate for mayor, Mark Roy, has been outspent by at least a 4 to 1 margin.

My candidate for alderman (i.e., me) was knocked out in the primary. Of ther emaining two, one is a dreary, good old boy hack, the other a right-wing bombthrower. No choice at all

My candidate for alderman at large, Jane Beaulieau, has almost no shot at winning.

At least my school board member, Mike DeBlasi, is assured of a win, since he's unopposed!

3. Nope. Tried that before.
He was on the board for two years. It took him almost six months before he said anything. I mean ANYTHING, even a seconding a motion to adjourn. He sat there and took his cues from another good old boy and added nothing to the board. That's why I ran against him (and beat him) in 2007.

5. I'm outside our city limits.
not too disappointed since the crop of candidates are similar, uninspiring would be a step up.

we do have a kid (26 yrs old) running for Mayor but as soon as I heard him say "government should be run as a business" :eyes:

7. Better than running it as a social club
The problem here is that it is the same insular good old boy clique that dominates year after year. Newbies see this and decide not to get involved in municipal politics, which only perpetuates the problem.

11. which is why the Mayor's race is kind of interesting
good ol boy vs black republican (serious player with the GOB) vs rich kid with no experience

musical chair candidates (first two)

thing is, I would have probably voted for the kid. :-)

8. Just hold on for a little bit. I'll rustle up some revolutionaries and we'll do a town coup.
You will have your place of choosing in my junta.

10. We have some important stuff on the ballot here
Not really candidates, but issues. There are three people running for the non-partisan township trustee positions of which there are two. Then there is a school board candidate who is running unopposed.

But the issues and levies could mean a great deal locally and statewide. Casinos are on the ballot again. They want to build four of them one each in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo. On another issue they want to create a new statewide livestock board that would be responsible for oversight of animals on Ohio's farms. There's an issue for a state compensation fund for veterans of the Persion Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq wars. There's a levy for our local public libraries on the ballot as well as another for the preservation of our city parks. And finally a levy for the township trash man.

13. we're getting a new mayor
the Rep is a walking asshat

the Dem apparently pulled some strings to get his wife a cushy $100k a year job with social services, a job that was not posted. Others hired in that same department, during a hiring freeze were the daughter of the police chief and the daughter of a superior court judge

sigh

hold nose

go with straight party - shrug

15. Non-partisan ballot
Even so, the local Dem organization dredges up some real mediocrities at the municipal level. The so-callled leader of the Dems at City Hall supported John McCain and talked smack about Obama on patriotism issues; voted to name a bridge after Judd Gregg, with no chance for debate; and supported a Republican-written budget that gutted funding for public schools, community policing, and bus service.

16. Could be worse... You could be voting for mayor of Houston.
Our choices:

Black Guy
Rich White Guy
Lesbian

or Hispanic Republican

(Great and descriptive story about it in the Houston Press :D)

I think I'm going to vote for the lesbian...
