Song suggestions?
So a friend of mine is going to be divorced soon after a bad, short-lived marriage. I'd like to make him a CD celebrating his freedom. Not necessarily songs that will remind him of the past, but more like, now you're free and have a great future ahead (he's young...late 20s).

Any suggestions? (He likes all kinds of music. Loves Johnny Cash.)

Thanks! :hi:

1. I keep a close watch on this heart of mine.
I keep my pants up with a piece of twine.
Say you'll be mine.
I'll pull the twine.

2. First thing that comes to mind
Edited on Fri Oct-30-09 07:47 PM by hippywife
is Paul Simon Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover. :hi:

ETA: Since he likes Johnny Cash, I would also suggest Jackson.

5. Cyrkle-Red Rubber Ball, and especially for the last verse/chorus
I should have known you'd bid me farewell
There's a lesson to be learned from this and I learned it very well
Now, I know you're not the only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again, it's all the same to me

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball

You never care for secrets I confide
For you, I'm just an ornament, somethin' for your pride
Always runnin', never carin', that's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time were all you had to give

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball

The story's in the past with nothin' to recall
I've got my life to live and I don't need you at all
The roller-coaster ride we took is nearly at an end
I bought my ticket with my tears, that's all I'm gonna spend

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball

Oh, I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The mornin' sun is shinin' like a red rubber ball

6. Divorce Song
Not exactly what you asked for but a good song from back when Liz Phair was good...

And when I asked for a separate room
It was late at night, and we'd been driving since noon
But if I'd known how that would sound to you
I would have stayed in your bed for the rest of my life
Just to prove I was right
That it's harder to be friends than lovers
And you shouldn't try to mix the two
'Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy
Then you know that the problem is you
And it's true that I stole your lighter
And it's also true that I lost the map
But when you said that I wasn't worth talking to
I had to take your word on that
But if you'd known how that would sound to me
You would have taken it back
And boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Burned it up and thrown it away
You put in my hands a loaded gun
And then told me not to fire it
When you did the things you said were up to me
And then accused me of trying to fuck it up
But you've never been a waste of my time
It's never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you'll be alright
And the license said you had to stick around until I was dead
But if you're tired of looking at my face, I guess I already am
But you've never been a waste of my time
It's never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you'll be alright

8. More Johnny--"I'll be as gone as a wild goose in winter..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipjaLMd8TqM

Don’t call my name out your window, I’m leavin'
I won’t even turn my head.
Don’t sent your kinfolk to give me no talkin'
I’ll be gone, like I said.

You’d just say the same old things
That you be sayin' all along,
Just lay there in your bed and keep your mouth shut,
Till I’m gone.
Don’t give me that old familiar cryin cussin' moan

Understand your man
I'm tired of you bad mouthing
Understand your man

You can give my other suit to the Salvation Army,
And everything else I leave behind --
I ain’t takin' nothin' that’ll slow down my travelin’
While i'm untangeling my mind.

I ain't gonna repeat, what i said anymore
While i'm breathing air that ain't been breath before.
I'll be as gone as a wild goose in winter
Then you'll understand your man

Meditate on it!
Understand your man
You hear me talking?

Understand your man
You remember what i told you?

Don’t call my name out your window, I’m leavin'
I won’t even turn my head.
Don’t sent your kinfolk to give me no talkin'
I’ll be gone, like I said.

21. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" - Dylan or Clapton
It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When the rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm travellin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

Sorry, but when I was posting the last two Guster songs, I was thinking "There are two Guster songs that are perfect for this occasion, but I forget what they are," and posted those anyway. Happier and So Long work but these two work better.
