CHALLENGE: Pick a random DU thread title, run it through Babelfish, and re-post it here
"Damn Sara Lee to hell....I broke down and bought one of the frozen pound cakes"...run through Babelfish, English-to-Russian, becomes:

Проклятое Сара Лее к аду….Я сломал вниз и купил один из замороженных тортов фунта

"My cat is acting like a fucking lovesick teenager!"...run through the English-to-Portuguese, becomes:

Meu gato está actuando como um adolescente lovesick do caralho!

Have fun.

:toast:

1. Boring--how about this--

5. Oh, I know...

...I'd blame that one less on Babelfish and more on the fact that Japanese is one tough language. I took Spanish and French in school and, for the most part, you can go back and forth with relative ease between "literal translations." Not so in Japanese, and that's largely due to a major disconnect with Western colloquialisms.

I have a few books on Japanese culture, and from what I've read, the first Japanese citizen who taught the language to a Westerner was executed for their efforts.

The language is also peppered with what are called "loan words"...things like "ice cream" become "isu kurimo" (not an accurate spelling, but a correct pronunciation)...
