But, if it helps introduce people to the delights of brussels sprouts, I guess I'm all 'for' it.

Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 11:38 PM by Odin2005
Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are all the result of 1000s of years of genetic modification by humans, AKA "breeding". their ancestor is an unspectacular Old World weed.

1/2 teaspoon onion salt
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Salt and pepper
2 cups buttermilk
3lb fryer chicken

mix the salts and peppers into the flour.
Soak the chicken overnight in the buttermilk.
put the chicken pieces in a bag with the flour and shake.
Fry chicken pieces in oil in medium heat with frying pan, turning, until golden brown.

Clean, cut them in half, toss in olive oil, put in a shallow pan in a 425 degree oven, turn after 10 minutes, roast another 5 to 10 minutes until they are as brown and crispy as you like. Season to taste.

You can't get the kids to eat the Brussels Sprouts.

Though I should rephrase that to "most kids" - my son loves them. Mushrooms on the other hand are his pet hate.

47. I actually tried that recipe yesterday and it wasn't half bad.
Although I did add some minced garlic to the heated oil before putting in the sprouts. The next time I cook 'em I'll use my wok to steam them tender after sauteing them. That's the only change I'd made to this preparation. Otherwise they do not taste like the smelly mess that comes after you boil these little green turds.

so, I have no idea. But it does look like a decorative cabbage or something.

88. He loves brussel sprouts and used to grow them in our backyard.
He may grow them again next year in a garden he's talked about starting.

The ones he ordered tonight were cooked with bacon.

I order eggplant when we go out because he doesn't like it so I don't usually cook it at home;
he orders brussel sprouts because I don't like them and won't cook them at home!

90. Isn't social reciprocity great! So, sprouts have helped your marriage!
I'm with him. Eggplant is too slimy for me.

It's great that you do this! May you have many years of sprouts/eggplant 'dates'!

I've no doubt this social reciprocity has appeared elsewhere in your marriage. It sounds like he's a 'keeper'!

Brussels sprouts!

THIS could be a scene from YOUR backyard THIS weekend!

A tower of Brussels Sprouts makes a great holiday gift.

Think of the pride you'll feel as your kin say, "X, you really shouldn't have!"

76. I love Brussels Sprouts too.
Got some in the fridge right now, as a matter of fact. Love 'em swimming in melted butter.

I have to admit I haven't seen them growing. Are the leaves opened at the top good to eat steamed too?

77. You are among friends, astral. I don't know if the upper leaves are edible. I would assume so.
Perhaps they're kind of bitter?

Others have asked this question and no one seems to have an answer. I might call or e-mail an extension service to see if they know.

Keep enjoying brussels sprouts!
