Why do I still cook fish on Fridays in Lent??
I was raised Catholic and am basically what you would call fallen away. And yet still, I find myself thawing out the fish every Friday in Lent. Odd.

Tonight we're having baked Tilapia in a lemon butter sauce. Perhaps it's because I just like fish and this is a good reason. MrG is not particularly fond of fish...but he's fond of me...so he'll eat it.

;)

1. I do the same. I think it's basically "Catholic" guilt.
I don't eat fish, but the husband does. He's having orange roughy and chips, aka French fries. I'm having potato pancakes and salad.

14. I love potato pancakes!
My grandmother used to make them. Mine are nowhere near as good as her's. She took the recipe with her, and all I can do is try.

2. Baked tilapia in a lemon butter sauce?
When I was a kid we got fish sticks. I'd still be catholic if we got baked Tilapia in a lemon butter sauce! :9

4. At least Tilapia in lemon butter sauce isn't particularly Lenten.

9. True, the house doesn't smell like it used to when I was a kid. There
is no clinging odor of overfried batter in the air. :hi:

and neither were my parenets of wife's parents...

but Friday night fish fry is a tradition here in the Northwoods and we've just plain gotten into the habit........

on edit: My son has been away from Wisconsin for three years now and he tells me one of the things he most misses is friday night fish fry.....he says the southerners around him look at him like he's got a hole in his head......must be a midwest thing.....

12. I never thought it could be regional. That's really something.
When we lived in N.C. We used to go to a place called Arcadia Fish Shack on Fridays. :hi:

15. Fish is good
but I'll probably have pasta without meat today. My family was so strict we didn't even have fish on Fridays of Lent.

19. I miss you too
But we do have a nice group, I must say.

Oh, the house is a nightmare. (Thanks for asking.) The seller is completely crazy, and after the inspection, she told her listing agent that she had to consult her "fairy companions" (yes, the type with wings, wands and dust, etc.) to give her advice. She's in touch with many entities that guide her, and she felt she couldn't come to terms with our demands that she fix the roof and deck.

I swear, I am going to have to write a book on this! :eyes:

We should find out tonight if it goes through, and I'll let you know. :loveya:

21. Wow, I've heard of home horror stories but that takes the cake. She
had to consult with fairies?? I wonder what you'll find in the attic. ;) Yes, keep me posted. Hope that's the worst bump you encounter. When we bought our home the owner's wouldn't fix the deck so we ripped it out. Gave us a lot more room.

:loveya:

22. I know, I know
But we are freak magnets, so here we are, trying to negotiate with her. We're all ready to go with the mortgage, etc., we just need to hammer out the details.

She did offer to sell us her towels as well. :wow: That kind of threw me, I have to admit.
:loveya:

20. Cause you have been brainwashed by the Catholic church.
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 07:19 PM by RebelOne
It's been a habit ingrained in you for all your life. But that's OK, fish is good anytime of the week. In fact, I am having salmon tonight.
