The ever-present Saturday morning college football thread!!!
This is 'Homecoming' weekend for my WVU Mountaineers, and the first time all season that we've been in the Top 25. It's wet, but not raining, and neither warm nor cold. We play UConn at noon; this coming off of the tragedy their team suffered last weekend; UConn's star cornerback Jasper Howard was murdered late Saturday night. WVU players and fans will be sporting Howard's #6 on helmets and armbands respective, in sympathy for their opponent's loss.

So... who are you rooting for???

2. When it comes to Army...
I always look at it this way: Unlike a lot of other schools, the Service Academies don't recruit JUST for gridiron skills. If they end up with some on-field talent, it's a bonus, but that's not what they're about.

On a personal note, i wouldn't know who to pull for. I don't care much for the Irish, but BC is a Big East defector, so that's a little more personal.

GO !!!

9. Iowa is having an impressive season
Wisconsin, Arizona, and Penn State are all ranked(BCS standings) and knocked Michigan out of the top 25. They earned the ranking and I'll be rooting for them to keep it up.

It's almost hard to believe they almost threw their season away down the drain in week 1.

11. Oklahoma plays at Kansas today
OU has lost three games, but by a total of five points. Kansas was ranked to start the season, but have looked pretty average at times, pretty good at others.

Another team of mine, Illinois, has its last best chance for a Big 10 win today against Purdue. Purdue beat Ohio State last week, so perhaps they'll have a let-down game.

18. Charest is doing pretty well, too
Got a chance for a touchdown now before halftime.

Juice has a very strong arm and he's a great athlete, but his lack of development as a QB has been disappointing. Eddie McGhee (who has been in at WR) was also a fairly highly-regarded QB coming out of high school, and since Juice's sophomore year (when they went to the Rose Bowl) they've had an odd platoon system so that neither has really gotten the rhythm of full games strung together.

Now Juice is back in. It's a weird substitution pattern for QBs, that's for sure.

And they missed the FG. :banghead:

22. Juice just got a touchdown run
Good drive by Illinois. Also not long before that and 4th & 1 they handed it to a running back and was hit behind the line of scrimmage and battled his way to a first down and extra 5 yards on top of that. Very nice second effort when many would be tackled in the backfield under those circumstances.

21-14 Purdue.

16. Two teams on the verge of beign ranked in the top 25 for the first time ever.
Central Michigan is 6-1 and currently #31, so if they hold on to beat Bowling Green and a few teams ahead of them lose, they could be in the AP top 25 for the first time ever.

The University of Idaho is 6-1 and received 4 votes in this week's AP poll. Last week they received one vote, and it was the first vote the school had ever received in the AP poll. They're also bowl eligible for the first time in over ten years. (Their last bowl was the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl.) So congrats to the Vandals.

Than if Boise St beats them while they're 9-1 that could give the Broncos a big push. However Fresno State is no pushover and if I was to make predictions I pick the Bulldogs to win that game.

A related note, the Vandals beat Colorado State by 2..

Edit/They also beat Northern Illinois on the road by 3.

I've seen teams give up five or six TOs running the option, but I can't remember ever seeing a team turn the ball over that many times.

Makes me excited to see what OU's defense can do to that offense when they play in a couple of weeks ...

53. Clone Zone Classics: 1977 ISU-Nebraska Highlights

LINCOLN, Neb. - Iowa State's conference road-opener in 1977 began in Lincoln, Neb., against the ninth-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Huskers, still smarting from ISU's 1976 victory in Ames, entered the contest after defeating nationally ranked Alabama the previous week.

NU scored first with an I.M. Hipp 59-yard TD in the first quarter to go up, 7-0. ISU promptly answered with a 13-play, 76-yard scroing drive that ended with quarterback Terry Rubley's 5-yard run on the option to even the score. Another Hipp touchdown, this time from 17 yards, gave NU a 14-7 lead, but it was quickly followed by Cyclone Dexter Green's 19-yard TD run to once again even the score (14-14). ISU finally took its first lead in the seesaw affair after Mike Clemons recovered Husker quarterback Randy Garcia's fumble. The turnover led to a 3-yard Cal Cummins TD run to give ISU a 21-14 edge at intermission.

ISU kicker Scott Kollman extended the lead to 24-14 early in the third quarter with a 32-yard field goal. Hipp scored his third TD of the day in the third quarter to close the gap to 24-21, but the ISU defense shut down NU's comeback to register a second straight win over the Cornhuskers. Green and Cummins carried for 139 and 115 yards on the ground, respectively.

Last week in a game no one saw they lost to (my team) Arizona State and they have a poor QB(Defense is statistically the best in the conference though) and the Huskies got handled by Stanford a few weeks ago. Oregon is a very powerful team with a strong running game which is where Washington is very vulnerable. If USC would've just pounded the ball with Joe McKnight they would have won.

(Disclaimer:For those that look at Condem's pick 'em thread in the Sports Forum you will see I picked Washington. The reason that is my strategy which as it always has been is I pick who I'm rooting for. In this case I hate Oregon and root against them 90% of the time but logically Oregon is the clear favorite)

Forcier makes a bone head move and spikes the ball on 3rd down at the 4 yard line with 13 seconds left. Plenty of time to take a shot and kick a field goal on the next play if you don't score.

122. They seem like a team of destiny
They hadn't scored a touchdown all day, but they got their TD drive in the last minute.

MSU actually had an interception that would have won the game, but it was nullified by the defensive holding penalty (which was the right call). That gave Iowa 1st and goal, and after three straight incompletions they connected on a quick slant for the game-winning score.

Quite a finish. Somewhere condem is celebrating, I'm sure, and the Iowa Hawkeyes are 8-0 for the first time ever. Wow.

No lie. Not in the conference in the nation against a very good running back that plays for Stanford.

The game should be on Fox Sports if you do happen to watch it but if you do keep your eye on #7 for both teams for that matter. Vontaze Burfict for Arizona St and the #7 guy for Stanford. Should be one hell of a matchup.

The thing I hate about these games ending so late is College Football Live on ESPN is wrapping up and the winning 50 yard touchdown pass from last week wasn't even on Sportscenter's top 10. I was pissed. :grr:

I was referring to the missed field goal negated by a "leaping" penalty by Vontaze Burfict. He's a great player with tremendous athletic skills but his aggressiveness gets him penalized quite a bit. 4-5 last week against Washington.

136. I thought that was a pretty weak call too
Maybe I just didn't get a close enough look at the replay, but it wasn't helmet-to-helmet (I didn't think) and while they can call a personal foul for "leading with the helmet" on any tackle, I thought he had his shoulder lowered and was shoving his hands out--at least that's how it looked to me from the reverse angle on the replay

ASU needs to score.

I'd be hopeful for a comeback. They certainly have the defense for it(I know they aren't showing that they do now). Oh well. Still going to watch and see if anything changes but ASU needs to score when they get the ball to start the third quarter.

144. I was yelling at the TV over the fumble
I didn't realize they had the same fumble rule that applies to under 2 minutes to 4th down. The rule makes sense to prevent purpose fumbles. Damn Sullivan dived too fucking soon. He could have easily got the first down. :argh:

141. Touchdown Arizona State!
Sullivan had some nice throws on the drive. 24-7. Still a long way to go but a great start. Desperately need a 3&out rather than a long drive to deflate the defense.

145. Riddle me my Texas A&M Aggies.
Last week, they go to Kansas State and get housed, 62-14. This week, they go to Texas Tech, where they NEVER win and win 52-30. I'm confuzzled.

147. I didn't see it mentioned on College Football Final.
Not even in the "elsewhere in the Big 12" section. Oh well, I guess we don't rate. :(

I suppose I might have missed it due to the Sounders game, but I was hoping for at least a mention.

148. Arizona State only was showcased on college football final when they played Georgia
They don't rank highly with the folks at ESPN either. :(

149. Tech was a ranked (AP) team too.
Oh well. When you've sucked as long as we have, it's to be expected I guess.

151. Didn't A&M have a good record a few years ago with the QB
that was briefly a Bengals receiver? I think it was McNeil or something. Either way good win for A&M :toast:

152. Yeah, they were about 8-3 or so a few years back.

Went to the Cotton Bowl when the Big 12 got two teams in the BCS, got smoked by Tennessee. In reality, they were over their heads. But the next year, back to sucking.

Year two of Ray Sherman. Good recruiting classes, so maybe we're heading the right direction. We'll see. I've learned not to be too hopeful. :P

Your Sun Devils are mounting a comeback. ETA - er belay that. :(

153. They let Stanford score again
It sucks too because this defense was #2 in the nation(7 overall) in stopping the run and they are letting Stanford run wild. Their freshman QB is a waaaaaaaaay better QB than Arizona State's Senior quarterback. A bright spot is they had a very good recruiting class and landed the #1 MLB recruit in the nation Vontaze Burfict so he still has 3 more years and he is already their best defensive player as a true freshman. Also true freshman Gerell Robinson is one of their leading receivers as well. Running game is strong. I hope they have some good QBs down the stretch or they won't have anything to show for it.
