6. I considered him more Odd than scary
then again it was certainly a very weird movie. I am not sure who the target audience was. It was a bit childish for adults, but way too intense for children.

I think "scary" is as subjective as "funny", too.

what scares one may not scare another.

the movement of this guy, weirded me out. The whole scene was bizarre and surreal and otherworldly.

51. I didn't think it was childish per se
a fairy tale, yes, but in the original tradition of the Grimms.

The best special effects I've seen in a LONG time. Almost no CGI used.

I loved it, but frankly, it was too intense for a lot of adults too, especially if they were expecting something harry potterish

67. I watched it again just last week; it's on Comcast's OnDemand HBO service
I don't know that there's a convincing way to equate any of the monsters with specific aspects of the girl's mundane existence, and for my money I don't think that it's important to do so, either.

A magnificent, gorgeous film.

68. Yes, I realize that but the first time I watched it I was trying to figure it
out. The second time, I just watched it for the splendor of it all. I would like to watch it for a third time. "mundane" existence ?? Extraordinary times and she had front row seat to it all. I called them dream sequences because I really did not know how else to describe them. I agree with you though. A stunning film.

69. Perhaps a poor choice of words
By "mundane" I meant "not magical," rather than "boriing."

I suspect that if the film were made by an American director for a chiefly American audience, it would have ended with the Faun kicking the Capitan's ass, which would have been horribly lame!

an American director would have found some way for her to live, you are right about that.

I laughed at the thought of Faun kicking The Capitan's ass :headbang:

in my heart of hearts, I wanted it to happen and you know you did too :)

11. Alien (the first one, 1979)
I know most people aren't frightened by this creature any more, thanks to all the action-only sequels. But when I saw it opening day in '79, it scared the hell out of me for years. That is, the kind of monster that shows up in your dreams time and time again :scared:

Wikipedia has a very long write-up on it, too :)

60. I've heard several times that that story is baloney
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 07:12 AM by Orrex
I've been googling to find it, but with no success.

The main argument against it IMO is that John Hurt had to be fitted into a prosthetic mounted to the table, so it's not as though he and the other cast members could all walk in together and get started.

I imagine it went something like this:

CARTWRIGHT: Why are you all trussed up in the table like that, John?

HURT: Um. No reason. Just act natural.

The essence of the story IIRC is that the cast didn't know exactly what was going to happen, but since Hurt was rigged up with a false chest and a bunch of blood-hoses, and the film crew was wearing smocks, they suspected that something messy was about to take place. The particulars, such as the baby alien's appearance, may not have been revealed to them in advance, but the general arc of the scene almost certainly was.

28. No, I meant that I thought the movie I saw on UHF was a documentary.
I was in first or second grade. I had rarely seen color TV and had never seen a science fiction movie that looked so real. This was about five years before Star Wars came out. Plus the it had army guys, airplanes and atomic bombs and not science fiction-looking stuff.

So, I thought it might be real.

Maybe I could love you. Maybe I was lying because when you do love someone sometimes you say you don't because you're playing hard to get, playing a game.
Games?
Yeah, I was just playing a game with you.
Love games?
Thats right, love games, Gregg.

Love games?

Do you love me?
Are you playin' your love games with me,

Slow it down, give me with space,
Movin' too fast, this isn't a race.
