28. The dude was probably making it up.
Catnip releases chemicals that bind to certain cat pheromone receptors, which trigger secondary reactions in their nervous systems. Cat pheromones have no effect on humans because we don't have those receptors.

Certain catmint plants contain other chemicals which can have a sedative effect on humans similar to a very mild marijuana, but the reaction isn't related.

21. I bought a couple of catnip plants this spring.
Raised them all year in the garden and yesterday I cut them and stuffed them in a big bag. So I clipped off a couple of the big buds and gave them to my cat Buddy. He seemed only mildly interested. The fresh leaves didn't do much to blow his skirt up either.

I thought he would have loved it since it's fresh and therefore more potent. And he's gone nuts over dried catnip that I've bought before. I wonder if the variety of the catnip plant and/or where it was grown that makes a difference?

22. I was wondering that too, I cut the rest of my plants yesterday and put them up to dry out
I just didn't get the same response that I do when they get the dried out stuff from the store, I figured they would go nuts with freshly cut :(

23. I read up on this at Wiki
Wikipedia says, "When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip..."

Let's bruise the hell out of those leaves and stems, then see what happens. I suppose that must help release the active ingredient, which is called nepetalactone. I think I'll chop some of mine up and stuff it in an old sock, then jump up and down on it or smash it with a hammer.

11. That's pretty much the same drill with mine.
The big fat male rolls around on it for a while, then crashes flat on his back. His sister jumps around in it then hunkers down on top of it and give you the stink eye if get to near her pile. Too funny.

always covers the catnip with his body to protect it from me. What a hog he is.

19. Totally cute!
I planted catnip in my garden this spring and wondered all summer why it didn't grow. Then I caught Muezza chewing on a sprig in August and I was like... DUH! I have three cats: no wonder they're so happy and lazy all the time!

Cute kittehs!

20. Yeah - maximum excitement
until they zone out.
Had a cat that got paranoid on catnip. She wanted me to hold her under a blanket on the couch until she fell asleep. The other cat got hers after that.
